How do you feel at this point in your career?

I feel very grateful and moved because every time I see society more connected with its spirituality and with the love that lives within each one of us and around us. I feel full of hope because I see people looking for the good and moving from love.

What inspired you to write “Wake Brain”?

I am a clinical scientist at Columbia University and for 20 years I have viewed spirituality as a birthright. I have studied in detail how by listening to God or any higher being you believe in, when we connect with that force, we are healthier, happier, recover from difficult times faster and have healthier relationships.

The reason why I think this book is very important right now is because the world is coming out of a very dark time, where there was a lot of uncertainty, and this is a tool with which people can awaken their spiritual brain to connect with their life, with the universe, with your god and with the harmony that this can bring to your life.

How was it for you, as a scientist, to realize that emotions and spirituality can have such a big effect on a person’s life and physical body?

A few years ago there were really very few scientific studies that demonstrated the relationship between spirituality and a person’s physical health. They were considered two different worlds. Now the same science is showing how these two come together and how each affects the other. For me, it has been very gratifying to see how the new generations and society in general are opening up to these important issues.

How would you describe the difference between being a religious person and being a spiritual person?

First of all, it doesn’t matter if you are not a religious person, you will always be a spiritual being. It is something that we all bring from birth. When we accept our spirituality, we know that we are loved and that we are being guided by a higher power, becoming better people with ourselves and with others.

We are born with the spirituality to transcend and religion is a gift that comes from the environment in which we are born. Religion is the way in which many people embrace their spirituality and with which they obtain tools to approach it.

What benefits can connecting more with our spirituality bring to our lives?

It is scientifically proven that people who are connected to their spirituality are less prone to depression and 80% less likely to become addicted to alcohol or drugs. It is with these data that we can realize that a large part of what we call illness or addiction begins with blocking our spiritual connection. When you start to open your mind and your soul to the questions: What does the universe want from me? What is life trying to tell me? This is how you open yourself to receiving many gifts that perhaps you did not expect.

What is the message you want to convey to your readers with this book?

I have two. When we awaken the spiritual brain and speak from this awakened consciousness, we give each other the opportunity to do the same and our relationships are founded on deep love. The second message is that we are on the verge of a new global vision with which we will be raised and built by awakening our consciousness and our hearts.
