Interview

On tour in the churches and cathedrals of France for her album Croire, Natasha St Pier performs on Saturday evening in Riom. After moving away from the media world and the star system, she confides in her approach to spirituality which guides her life and inspires her songs.

You perform at the Saint-Amable basilica in Riom, is there a particular reason for your coming? The request of the inhabitants of the territory brings me here. Since I am doing a tour of religious buildings all over France, it was a great opportunity to come to Riom. I’m happy to come to your place?!

Have you visited Puy-de-Dôme before? I did a concert at the Saint-Jean d’Ambert church some time ago. Afterwards, to know all the dates it’s quite complicated: when you’re on tour, you don’t really see the cities where you perform. It is often hotel and theater. When my son accompanies me, I nevertheless try to show him things, so that he can travel, enjoy and discover France.

Does your son Bixente often accompany you on tour? From time to time. He loves it, being on tour and visiting the regions of France. We make it a point of honor to visit museums, parks and exceptional local areas. God knows there are a lot of them in France. Especially in Puy-de-Dôme.

To come back to your concert, how will it unfold? We are at the end of the tour and very happy to come to Riom. We are going to offer, with my team, the songs from my album Croire, poems by Thérèse de Lisieux from my previous albums, but not only…

Will there be a few little surprises then? Yes indeed, there will be several.

Part of the proceeds from the concert will be donated to an association… Yes, like every show I give. Tonight’s concert will fund the Saint Matthieu Foundation. It participates in the maintenance and renovation of schools of Catholic Education. This allows this institution to continue to fulfill its mission of education in the church for young people. It’s really close to my heart.

Your album “Croire” is described as “spiritual”. What does that mean ? It’s an album that invites us to reflect on our relationship with ourselves and with others. It also allows you to reflect on what you are looking for in life. We rarely take the time to stop and ask ourselves if we are in the right place, what we really want. “Am I who I want to be?” or “am I the best version of myself?”. All these reflections which are often in the realm of the spiritual.

This faith, have you always had it? Yes, I was raised Catholic and for me faith is of course part of spirituality. We believe in something without having real proof of it. Through this faith, we try to grow and make the right decisions.

But then, your concert is reserved for believers? Absolutely not. It is open to all. It’s not a show that will try to convert the audience. It’s a show that’s going to try to do good for the audience, help them feel good about themselves.

Is this the message you want to convey through your album? I think so. In Croire, I also tried to talk about women who inspire me because they have values that are close to those of Christianity, spiritual and emotional.

In your album, you also address the theme of motherhood… Inevitably, motherhood changes us. It starts when you are pregnant but once the birth arrives, everything changes even more. We find out what unconditional love is. I wanted to pay tribute to the woman I have become.

You moved away from the star system, why? I wanted to give more chance to what I love, to do something other than entertainment even if entertaining people is something very beautiful. I wanted, very selfishly, to bring a little more, to feel that my music had added value.
