Summer Game Fest: The 13 horror and survival

There was like a wind of horror that blew over the Summer Game Fest. If you have watched the various conferences at the beginning of June, you will not have missed it: the survival horror are more and more numerous, and fans of the genre will have plenty to do in the coming months. In order to sort through the various announcements a bit, we have grouped together the main horror games that will be released soon and which showed up during the Summer Game Fest.

Here are 13 must-see survival horrors in 2022 and beyond. Note that we include all horror-oriented games with this term, to better group them.

The Callisto Protocol

The new king of survival-horror in space, it may be him. Developed by Series Dad Glen Schofield dead space, The Callisto Protocol made a strong impression during its appearances at the Summer Game Fest, with a captivating first trailer and a gameplay sequence that allowed us to see that we were undoubtedly in front of the dead space 4 which never existed.

Taking up all the aspects of the Electronic Arts series, with a hero stuck in space, strange creatures that can be cut, a gore staging at will and even a life bar displayed on the character’s back , there is no doubt that the game is a spiritual sequel to dead space which should catch the eye of all survival-horror fans. And on top of that, you won’t have to wait too long for it, since it’s one of the few games to be released this year.

Routine

  • Platforms : PC – Xbox One – Xbox Series

Survival-horror in space, there were a lot of them during the Summer Game Fest, but if there is one game that we expected more, it’s Routine. Announced almost ten years ago, the horror game came to surprise us with a very scary new trailer.

Presenting itself as an FPS taking place on an abandoned moon base, Routine promises to make us jump with its terrifying robots that haunt the place, and which will make short work of our character. Armed only with his cosmonaut assistance tool, our protagonist must above all flee these threats and hide in order to hope to survive.

Fort Solis

  • Date : Unknown
  • Platforms : pc

The third space survival-horror present at Geoff Keighley’s (yes, it’s starting to do a lot), it was Fort Solis. Haloed by an exceptional vocal cast, with the presence of Troy Baker (The Last of Us) and Roger Clark (Red Dead Redemption 2), the title will present itself as a space adventure where we will also go to explore an abandoned station not so abandoned, but this time on Mars.

From what little we could see, Fort Solis will focus above all on its narration, more than on the action. We will therefore have choices to make that will lead to several possible scenarios, and it will be up to us to choose where to go among the nine structures that make up the base.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

resident evil 4 remake 2 3

  • Date : March 24, 2023
  • Platforms : PC – PS4 – PS5 – Xbox One – Xbox Series

By dint of hearing rumors about him, the announcement of Resident Evil 4 Remake didn’t surprise many people, but it still excited all the fans of this cult episode. This reimagining of the fourth opus unveiled its first images during the State of Play, before telling us more during the Capcom Showcase.

We certainly haven’t discovered a lot of things about him, but we can see that the remake work is as pleasant as on Resident Evil 2 and 3, and the promise of updated gameplay also has something to make us curious. We are now waiting to see what changes will be made to the story, but until then, we are going to watch its first trailer on a loop.

Layers of Fears

Layers of fears 2 4

  • Date : Early 2023
  • Platforms : PC – PS4 – PS5 – Xbox One – Xbox Series

We were waiting for them silent Hillpotentially on Silent Hill 2 Remakebut Bloober Team returns to its first love with Layers of Fears. A title that leaked a few days before its announcement, and which promises us a return to the origins of the saga, with an episode very centered on psychological fear and an unpublished story to discover.

This is one of the first games of its kind to use the Unreal Engine 5 in order to give us even more cold sweats, and immerse us more in this disturbing universe, which will play on the visceral side of certain events for terrify us.

Aliens: Dark Descent

  • Date : 2023
  • Platforms : PC – PS4 – PS5 – Xbox One – Xbox Series

Well, we admit it, we cheat a little, Aliens: Dark Descent is not a survival-horror strictly speaking, but we had to talk about it since it will also have marked the Summer Game Fest, and that it adapts one of the greatest licenses of horror all time.

The title therefore presents itself more as a real-time strategic action game with an isometric view, in which we will have to control our teammates by giving them orders, choosing their class and preventing them from dying, because each death is final. We will also have to manage our base to find new technologies and new skills for our soldiers, so as not to serve as food for the Xenomorphs.

ILL

Ill 6

  • Date : Unknown
  • Platforms : pc

Probably the most gory and disgusting game on this list, ILL came to conclude the presentation of the Future Games Show with a trailer that had enough to turn the stomach, and which does not hesitate to pour into body-horror.

Sensitive souls refrain therefore, since the Unreal Engine 5 is there to make everything even a little more realistic, with a first-person view which does not help and lighting which should make us jump. No doubt, ILL is not for everyone, but those who want a terribly gory gaming experience will be there.

Daymare 1994: Sandcastle

  • Date : Unknown
  • Platforms : PC – PS4 – PS5 – Xbox One – Xbox Series

Story to stay on resident Evilso much to speak of Daymare 1994: Sandcastle, which is very, but very strongly inspired by the Capcom saga. Difficult to deny it by looking at some gameplay images of the game, which takes a view in TPS and closed environments, with an inventory system and puzzles that almost border on copying.

But we saw it with Daymare 1998whose Daymare 1994: Sandcastle is the prequel, the series knows how to pay homage to resident Evil without being just a pale imitation. We hope that this episode will prove it once again.

Scorn

  • Date : October 21, 2022
  • Platforms : PC – Xbox One – Xbox Series

At Microsoft, it’s Scorn which caused a stir. This is clearly not the first time that we have been waiting to talk about the game, which has been repeatedly postponed, but during the Xbox-Bethesda Games Showcase, the title has finally given a definitive release date.

Scorn then presented us with some images of his sticky and cra-cra universe imagined by Hans Ruedi Giger, where the exploration will be more important than the action part of the game, even if we will be entitled to some alien weapons to defend ourselves. It’s certainly gray, but those looking for a visceral and scary experience should definitely take a look, especially since the title will be included in the Xbox Game Pass when it is released.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

  • Date : 2023
  • Platforms : PC – PS4 – PS5 – Xbox One – Xbox Series

Based on the movie of the same name, viz. Chainsaw Massacre in French, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre showed again briefly during the Xbox-Bethesda Games Showcase Extended to tell us about its release period and the platforms targeted.

The game will then take up the concept of a horror game with asymmetrical gameplay, with a player who embodies the killer Leatherface, and the others who must escape him. And even if the whole thing is played by several people, the title should still offer its share of anxieties, with terrifying situations and survivors who will be as fragile as a twig.

MADISON

  • Date : July 8, 2022
  • Platforms : PC – PS4 – PS5 – Xbox One – Xbox Series

MADISON, we will have seen it all over the place during these last conferences. And for good reason, the game was supposed to arrive in June, before being pushed back to the very beginning of July. And to be forgiven for his delay, he didn’t hesitate to show us much more.

The game bases all of its gameplay on taking different shots, which must then be analyzed to move forward. We will then have to do everything to escape the shenanigans of a demon, who forces us to perform one of the bloodiest rituals in his name, with an outcome that we imagine to be very gloomy.

Luto

Luto game 11

  • Date : 2022
  • Platforms : PC – PS4 – PS5

To see the images he was able to present to us during the Future Games Show, Luto definitely wants to become the heir of PT. Just take a look at the staging of the title and its unhealthy atmosphere to realize that Kojima’s aborted game project gave some ideas to the Broken Bird Games studio.

We will then have to walk through a labyrinthine house where we will certainly hesitate before opening each door, with ghosts lurking around the corner of a corridor. Nothing too surprising for a game that wants to deal with grief, but wants to do so by giving us a few nightmares.

Killer Frequency

Killer frequency 12

  • Date : 2022
  • Platforms : PC (Meta Quest 2)

We end with a bit of virtual reality thanks to Killer Frequencythe new Team 17 game for the Meta Quest 2 headset. Here we will play a Radio DJ who will have to help people survive on the phone, which means that we will have to make choices that will have serious consequences, with multiple endings.

We can also explore the radio station in the middle of the night, in order to solve a few puzzles and jump every time a light bulb does its thing, all to a background of music from the 80s.

This is enough to give us a few cold sweats in order to withstand the heat wave of this summer. One thing is certain, the genre of survival-horror promises to be richer than ever over the next few months, with as many indie games as AAA ones that will only aim to scare the crap out of us. And you, what horror games do you remember?
