As a prelude, Mo Laudi presents a work he is exhibiting: “Restitution: renaming the collection”. A ceramic, a black fist raised to the sky, “symbol of the south african liberation movement” for Mo Laudi. This fist rubs shoulders with the bronze figurine of an African warrior armed with a firearm. She is “inspired by the restitution of bronze works in Benin”, and in connection with the fact that the city of Saint-Étienne was an important arms factory.

A WIND FROM ELSEWHERE

A Wind from Elsewhere is blowing between Paris and Mozambique for the Globalisto exhibition, but also in Saint Etienne, with the artist Euridice Zaituna Kala, which exhibits “Personal archives: exercise in emotional archeology“ one of his works, at the invitation of Mo Laudi: Aïcha Goblet was a black model, the muse of many artists. Here she is in a life-size portrait, a way of “question the lack of visibility of people of color, as well as their identity.” An analysis in accordance with the values of the exhibition, which she presents at the microphone of Flavien Larcade in front of this work.

Originally from Maputo in Mozambique, Euridice Zaituna Kala lives and works in Paris. In her works, she supports a reading of the world through the prism of the African continent. This reflection manifests itself through books, stories, performances or sculptures. She has produced multiple exhibitions around the world and in 2017 co-founded the “east” (Ephemeral Archival Station). This collective is a space for artistic research inscribed in the same thought as the artist.

It is time for museums, with Western traditions, to open up and go to collections from other continents. It is absolutely necessary to tell new stories, those of the contemporary world which is open to a world without borders” (Aurélie Voltz)

I have always been interested in these questions related to new philosophies. Knowing how we can think differently today, rather than through the European prism.” (Mo Laudi)

The artists Josèpha Ntjam and Rapahel Barontini ©FL – Radio Nova

For this second part of Here and Elsewhere, Bintou Simporé and Hugues Marly receive the artists Josèpha Ntjam, Raphaël Barontini, and Myriam Mihindou, to share the meanings of their works.

A graduate of the National Schools of Art in Bourges and Paris, she directs her projects towards “the deconstruction of hegemonic discourses on origin, identity and race”. She draws her works from her family past and the pan-African movements for independence (her grandfather was killed by the French army in Cameroon in 1955). For the Globalisto exhibition. A Philosophy in Movement”, it offers sculptures, seabed, “hybrid” pieces, in connection with the theme of the exhibition.

Raphaël Barontoni was born in 1984 in Saint-Denis (Seine-Saint-Denis) where he still works. He feeds his works with the thought of authors such as Edouard Glissant and Aimé Césaire, around “creolization” (thought which wants the mixture of cultures to bring new forms of creation and reading of the world). A thought in line with the “Globalisto” exhibition, for which he composed large colorful canvases, portraits in homage to figures of the 18th century (Saint Maurice, the “Black Centurion” in the 13ᵉ century or Toussaint Louverture in the 18ᵉ).

Franco-Gabonese visual artist, Myriam Mihindou focuses her work on the relationship to the body and its appearances. She “questions energies, stories, landscapes, bodies and materials, paying particular attention to transmission”. “In the series entitled “The Shaken Tongue”, she literally and physically works the plasticity of words with copper wires, embroidery and cuts from printed works” (MAMC).
