“There is a lot to do to train people in the face of the dangers that can open the doors to an extraordinary action by the evil one, but also priests who unfortunately very often do not have adequate training in this regard”. It is the conviction that animated the spouses Giovanni Ziberna And Valeria Baldan who directed the documentary film “Libera Nos. The triumph over evil ”, produced by Sine Sole Cinema and released a few days ago in many cinemas throughout Italy. The film bears the patronage ofAie (International Association of Exorcists), making it the only cinematic work to have official approval.

How do you get to “Libera nos”?
The idea for the film was born 10 years ago following the grace received to be able to participate as auxiliaries in various exorcisms. The role of the auxiliary is that played by a layman or a non-exorcist priest who is in charge of assisting the exorcist by helping him both in a logistic way, preparing the place where the exorcism is performed, and in the assistance of the possessed person, keeping it so that she does not harm herself or others, and finally by participating spiritually with her own inner prayer.

In this experience we had the opportunity to understand what exorcism really is, that is an important moment of prayer, very far from what cinema has presented to us.

We have been able to see how the Lord acts with strength and power to save all souls and whoever is afraid during the exorcism is precisely the enemy.

We are used to a film production on the subject typical of the horror genre, with a strong spectacularization of the exorcist practice. Does your film want to put things back in the right order?
Let’s say that our goal is precisely this: to restore order on these topics. We tried to make a real one summa on this theme that addresses all possible topics in a sufficiently exhaustive way not to give rise to misunderstandings, but also leaving space for a subsequent study. Because really, on each of the topics covered in the film, you could talk for hours and hours and write dozens of books. Of course, the decision to make a cinematographic work put us on a time limit and that is why in the realization of the final montage we decided to divide the project into two separate films. What we now present in the rooms is to clarify the ministry of the exorcist and the role of the exorcist and will be preparatory to the next, who will deal more with the path of liberation with some testimonies and deepening the theme of the ordinary struggle with the devil, that is the one that concerns each of us.

Hence the choice to use actors to represent the exorcism scenes?
The decision is in line with the indications of the Holy See not to use recorded material during real exorcisms, a suggestion that we share recognizing its wisdom.

People who suffer from spiritual problems it is right that they are protected in their privacy and moreover, living in the age of media falsification, it is better to declare that the realization is a fiction rather than using real shots that could still be accused as mystifications.

Furthermore, we believe that those who do not want to believe in these realities will not change their mind by seeing a simple video, but through an in-depth path perhaps they will have the opportunity to ask themselves the right questions about it and open a glimmer of doubt.

In many believers the conviction has made its way that the practice of exorcism is something distant, existing only in the Gospels. But is it really so? Does the devil no longer exist?
Absolutely no. The problem of possessions and extraordinary demonic influence are not something distant, quite the contrary. Although possession refers to a rare event, we believe that precisely because we live in times in which the Catholic faith has diminished – while the search for the occult has increased exponentially – many more people have placed themselves in the danger zone. Paradoxically, today is worse than it used to be.

This does not mean that we must see the devil everywhere, but pretending that he does not exist has not brought good results, indeed he has played his game!

You and your wife directed the film together. Were you already familiar with the subject dealt with?
We decided to make this work in co-direction as with the film “The Awakening of a Giant. Life of Saint Veronica Giuliani“Because they are issues that we feel are very important and that give us the opportunity to transform our work into a work of evangelization.

What message does “Libera nos” bring?
We hope with this work it will bring light where there was darkness before, that it will make it clear and that it can be an important training tool for lay people and priests. But above all that it can be a path to have more awareness of one’s faith, more love for the Lord and for the Blessed Virgin, to whom the final part of the film is dedicated.
