The Estensi Gardens in Varese

The «Summer with great actors» festival takes place in Varese: three shows dedicated to prose theater, to bring some great performers of the national scene to the stage of the Estensi Gardens. Luca Zingaretti, Fabrizio Gifuni and Giulia Lazzarini are in fact the protagonists of the three events that will be held inside the tensile structure in the heart of the city park, for a theater review under the stars (see the poster here).

Appointment Monday 13 June, with The Siren, Reading by Luca Zingaretti from the story Lighea by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa: a work directed and interpreted by Luca Zingaretti; Monday 20 June with The fatality of rhyme. Tribute to Giorgio Caproni, conceived and interpreted by Fabrizio Gifuni; finally Monday 5 September with Walls. Before and after Basaglia, written and directed by Renato Sarti and performed by Giulia Lazzarini. The artistic and organizational programming of the Varese review is made possible thanks to the collaboration with the director of the Elfo Puccini Theater in Milan, Fiorenzo Grassi.

Combination of art and environment

«An imagined and calibrated proposal for an outdoor stage, with settings suited to the context and focused on the high quality of performers and contents – declares the Varese Councilor for Culture Enzo Laforgia -. They are three texts anchored in the present that give the city a review dedicated to drama, in a beautiful combination that allows you to attend theatrical performances with great actors and at the same time to enjoy one of the most beautiful city parks ».

«Three extraordinary and refined interpreters of dramatic art – explains the director of the Elfo Puccini Theater in Milan, Fiorenzo Grassi -. As soon as they were contacted, they enthusiastically agreed to the possibility of proposing in Varese three works that are reborn here, since the protagonists are currently engaged in other cinematographic activities. Three pièce that combine theater, culture and the beauty of the landscape as they will be in a unique context ».

The first show is on Monday 13 June at 9.30 pm with The mermaid. Reading by Luca Zingaretti. Absolute protagonist, as interpreter, director of direction and dramaturgical adaptation is Luca Zingaretti, actor known to the general public as the television face of the character created by Andrea Camilleri, Commissioner Montalbano. The mermaid is a work taken from a small literary jewel and tells the casual encounter between two Sicilians in a bar in Turin: a young journalist and an intellectual expert in classical culture. The two, in their diversity of culture and generation, form an understanding from which all the richness of the poetry of the Sicilian land emerges, with the smell of salt, the taste of sea urchins, the scent of rosemary on the Nèbrodi, the taste of Melilli honey, the bursts of perfume from citrus groves, the charm of Castellammare. The show is enriched by all these suggestions, accompanied by the music of Maestro Germano Mazzocchetti.

Monday 20 June, at 9.30 pm, the second appointment continues: it goes on stage The fatality of rhyme. Tribute to Giorgio Caproni. A work conceived and interpreted by Fabrizio Gifuni, Italian actor and director, winner of the David di Donatello as best supporting actor for Human capital. The fatality of rhyme is a tribute by Gifuni to one of the most profound Italian poets of the twentieth century, Giorgio Caproni, with a poetic journey in which the themes of the poet are explored, such as love, family relationships, loved cities – Genoa, Livorno, Rome – , the incomprehensible mystery of existence, the farewell from life: with a sparkling intelligence, a cutting irony, playing not to take itself seriously, Caproni accompanies us on a long poetic and musical journey until the moment of his “ceremonious” farewell . A foray into the acute forest of his thoughts, into the secret galleries of the soul of one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century.

Third and last appointment Monday 5 September, always at 9.30 pm, with Walls. Before and after Basagliawritten and directed by Renato Sarti and performed by Giulia Lazzarini. On the Varese stage one of Strehler’s favorite actresses. Written on the basis of the testimonies of some nurses, and above all that of Mariuccia Giacomini, Walls tells of life in an asylum before and after the revolution wanted by Franco Basaglia. Straitjackets, filth, massive use of cold showers, psychiatric drugs, beatings, electroshock, lobotomy. This was the asylum before Franco Basaglia’s arrival: a sort of lager, in which all kinds of coercion were perpetrated. With his intervention, dialogue and respect took the place of violence, under the banner of understanding and sharing human suffering. The protagonist reflects on her thirty-year experience as a nurse and does so with a particular nostalgia, that of the poet, with the lucidity of one who realizes that the extraordinary thrust of change of those years has faded over time and risks being swallowed up by the general indifference. The Basaglia law represents one of the highest points in the history of our democracy. It was one of the great social, human and civil achievements of our country.
