Within the framework of the Madrid International Tourism Fair (FITUR) 2023, The XVIII edition of the Excelencias Awards was held, in which Tequisquiapan was awarded for the project: Tequisquiapan, Paradise of Wellness Tourism.

This initiative to become a destination for well-being, rest, spirituality and an awakening of emotions, is achieved thanks to the urban image, its cleanliness and public safety that invite visitors to explore and enjoy the immense tourist diversity of Tequisquiapan.

More and more travelers are looking to discover experiences that promote physical, mental and emotional well-being, as well as a healthy and balanced diet; This is called Wellness or Wellness Tourism, a market in which Mexico ranks first in the Americas by offering destinations with endless activities such as spas, temazcales, and fitness spaces.

During the last years, Wellness Tourism in Tequisquiapan has positioned itself as an increasingly solid activity; It originated in Las Pozas, a natural space with hot springs where families began to dig wells to take relaxing baths.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the first inns and hotels were created to house visitors who enjoyed the hot baths with medicinal and health issues. To date, many houses in Tequisquiapan continue to have private pools, but most are not used because access to hot water is very difficult due to the depth where it is located.

In 2019, the international consulting firm Deloitte prepared a study entitled “Market Opportunities and Prospects for Health Tourism in Mexico” where Tequisquiapan appeared as a Wellness destination along with Los Cabos, Riviera Maya, Punta de Mita and San Miguel Allende. The vocation that was recognized in this study is contact with nature, meditation, yoga, spa and vegan.

In that same year, work began in the search for new experiences and new products respecting nature and without losing the essence of Tequisquiapan as a Magical Town, a distinction that it obtained on October 17, 2012 for being a place that preserves the essence of the province. with architecture, traditions, culture, gastronomy and unforgettable experiences; This is how the Wellness Tourism route was created.

Among the natural motivators that were considered to create the Wellness Tourism route are outdoor activities that can be carried out all year round such as horseback riding, cycling, walking, running, bird watching, outdoor exploration and meditation, yoga, etc. . Likewise, the production of lavender and other aromatic plants focused on relaxation and well-being is being developed.

Tequisquiapan is the perfect place to carry out any of the Wellness Tourism segments; It has a privileged location, being less than two hours from Mexico City; 35 minutes from the Querétaro International Airport and 45 minutes from the capital of Querétaro, not to mention that it is surrounded by four Magical Towns less than 30 minutes away.

Regarding tourist infrastructure, there are a total of 1,200 rooms in hotels and 1,000 in Airbnb of all categories. Several hotels have included temazcales among their spa services. There are more than 250 spaces for food consumption from traditional, pre-Hispanic, organic, international, fusion and author food.
