Interview with Narihlù, from the Land of Orchids to the Land of the Sirens

Narihlù Valdianese singer, born Luisa Loscalzo, gained the attention of the public last year with the single “Dame e cavalieri” by Valeria Rossi, whose hits such as “Three words”, Luna di lana “,” Tutto fa love “and” Ti dirò “, marked several seasons of the Italian song, before the singer from Monza decided to brush up on her degree and dedicate herself to counseling, as stated in an article by Sky TG24 – Show. Luisa Loscalzo, on the other hand, with the determination and tenacity of those who come from the province and want to establish themselves in the difficult world of the Italian music market, left her native Sassano, the city of orchids, just under five thousand inhabitants in the Salerno area, she studied first singing. at the “Giuseppe Martucci” Conservatory of Music in Salerno, graduating in Musicology, and then competing with musical theater and liturgical chant, accepting the apprenticeship that every self-respecting artist must or should do to refine and improve his art. After “Dame e cavalieri” distributed by Universal Music with executive production by the manager of Calabrian origins Massimo Marramao and a producer of the caliber of Pietro Foresti (Guns N’Roses and Counting Crows) returns to present himself in front of the Sorrentine public, during the Sorrentine Peninsula Award directed by Mario Esposito with a new musical project which, as she herself reveals in the presentation, wants to be “a look at the present, which places the search for a new spirituality suggested by these modern times at the center of the action. A journey through the folds of technological consumerism as if to make it more human and close to that desire to continue living strong and authentic experiences. A new mysticism that tries to escape from the destiny of being represented by a post, a state or a tweet ”. The following is the interview that the artist kindly granted me.

How was the stage name, Narihlù, born?

For a series of reasons related to the endearments to which my real name is lent, Luisa, which often became simply, Lù, and to the fact that this allowed me to remember a person very dear to me who no longer exists today. Then I discovered that “nar” in Turkish means pomegranate, a fruit that as you know is a symbol of abundance. The many sweet and juicy grains of which it is composed represent wealth, fertility, prosperity. Its red color is associated with blood, with a meaning of vitality, passion and energy, finally “nar” is linked to Istanbul which is a city that I adore.

Tell me about Luisa Loscalzo

A girl who was born in a small village in the province of Salerno, who immediately discovered that she had a great passion for singing and who, in order to study it, accepted the sacrifices involved in having to leave her country and move every day to the big city to study as well as to work and try to live on this passion.

Technically how would you define yourself, soprano, mezzo soprano?

I have a soprano vocal register, I started studying singing at the age of twelve and I immediately paid a lot of attention to the technique. More than lyric I liked the liturgical chant, Panis Angelicus above all but also the Deum Verum which when I sang for the first time excited me and I confess that emotion is everything for me. Whether I have to sing a lyrical aria or a pop song, the lyrics and the music must excite me otherwise, I can’t give my best in a performance. Dolente immagine di Fille mia by Vincenzo Bellini is another of those works that move me and that I tried to present for admission to the conservatory.

Tell me about the experience in the Salerno Conservatory

It was one of those choices dictated by the heart, I wanted to study singing, my mother let me do it but warned me that there would be hard work to move every day or almost every day from Sassano to Salerno. Then came the Musicology that I liked to deepen as a subject and today the West London University for Modern Singing. I always try to improve, one step at a time.

What is your favorite band or artist?

Well also in this case it is always the empathy that I try to dictate my choices, and so without thinking twice I answer Mango. Because I liked and I really like her music, I hear her lyrics close by. And in a certain sense he was from my part of town because Lagonegro, where Pino Mango was born, is thirty-one minutes by car from Sassano, less than 40 kilometers. There isn’t a Mango song that doesn’t make me shiver.

What can you tell me about your new project besides what you have already said during the presentation?

Well, if I was once alone, now I have a splendid team that supports me and bears me (smiles). In this field, having someone beside you who follows you with sincerity and professionalism is very important.

Finally, Sassano is known as the Country of Orchids, in general in many cultures this flower is also a good omen, what is your relationship with this flower?

I love orchids, I take care of them and I grow them at home I will be almost thirty-five and I recognize myself in this flower, for the innocence, the passion and the vitality it represents.

Thanks to Narihlù
