With nuptial mysticism, the young Sicilian Mariachiara Mattei, sick with cancer and suffering, welcomes Jesus on January 21, 2014, three years before her death in the concept of holiness
Is called nuptial mystique and consists in welcoming the transformation requested by Jesus to enter the Kingdom of Love: a path where even the most atrocious sufferings are welcomed with inner peace, and Mariachiara Messina, a cancer patient, knew well what she was getting into. The encounter with Jesus, the acknowledgment of this journey, took place on 21 January 2014, three years before the young Sicilian girl flew to heaven at the end of a serious form of tumor of the gland called “thymus”, which he had let her go.
Eternal and faithful love
Mariachiara Messina died in 2017 in the concept of holiness, according to many who had known him. But that day in 2014 is decisive. Because on that occasion she understands that her path is the one that goes from human love, which coincides with the need to be loved, to eternal and faithful love, that is, to chaste love for Jesus. Before she died, the young woman had spoken to don Luigi Epicocoin private conversations, from which the priest was inspired to write the book “With the cross in the heart and the resurrection on the face – Spiritual portrait of Mariachiara Messina” (Tau publisher).
Mariachiara’s diary
«A few days ago I understood – Mariachiara Messina wrote in her diary – that Jesus wants to start a process of transformation with me, but he can only do so if I agree to start and this means that I have to say my yes, that it will not be an easy process , but challenging, as there will be trials that are not easy to deal with and this means that I believe that no one can ever force me to do something (sins) that I don’t want (evil can tempt you, it’s true, but then it’s you to commit the sin or to refuse it), and no one can pass the tests for me, as if by magic, but I must face them myself».
The presence of Jesus
Mariachiara thought that this transformation consisted in giving up committing sins. But Jesus went further. «A transformation from what he foretold me for a long time, but I hadn’t understood. Nor did I have enough faith to be able to understand, nor is it still easy for me to understand how it can be that I myself will have this transformation. I so nothing in all things, in all facets».
“Suffering becomes Peace”
The young woman, suffering from cancer and suffering, in a nuptial mysticism that was by now increasingly clearer, maintained that «God wants to use me with his Goodness because in (my) weakness He shows his Power. And the greater the weakness, the greater the Greatness of Power He can manifest. And I understood that this will be my path, to go through in order to transform myself, and it will be a path full of hard work. Along the way, Suffering becomes Peace and Sadness becomes Joy».
The mystique of marriage
This page of January 21, 2014, writes Don Luigi Epicoco, is fundamental because it traces a path of nuptial mysticism, inspired by the spirituality of the Song of Songs, which Mariachiara meditates on through the reading of a modern spiritual text: “Feet of a deer on the high peaks” by Hannah Hurnard. It is a curious allegory, told like a fairy tale, of the mystical journey to God by the soul, which passes from fear to Love through the valley of trials and suffering. Mariachiara is reflected in it, re-reading in filigree the path of transformation that God is operating in her.
Accept your own fragility
By accepting his gifts and the limits dictated by the fragility of her health condition, Mariachiara Mattei arrived at her fundamental option: to love God in his concrete situation while not making a life choice (consecrated or married). Some might think that this was due solely to the fact that, as the disease progressed, the possibilities of making any choice diminished to the point of appearing illusory hopes. In reality, there has been an inner evolution in Mariachiara, which led her to choose Jesus as her only Spouse.
April 6, 2014: living with Jesus on the cross
On April 6, 2014, the young woman who died in the concept of holiness, noted in her diary: “Every suffering will be welcome to me because it is a privilege that the Lord grants me, as it is a way of living with Jesus on the cross, next to Him, to complete the Passion, to be offered for God, for what He wants most of all: to save souls, I will never be able to thank him enough for all that he has granted me, for his visits, joys and closeness of pains, for all the prayers, that he made many people do for me”.
