Invited by the Vincent van Gogh Arles Foundation, the Phare festival will present on December 1 a selection of short films made around the figure and life of the famous Dutch artist. In the form of fictions, animations and documentaries, these films tinged with humor and fantasy, shot for some in Arles and its surroundings, will invite the public to discover the expatriate painter in present-day São Paulo and to dive into the meanders of his painting. This program will also offer the opportunity to see or re-watch the beautiful documentary by Alain Resnais who revolutionized the art of documentary by filming the painter’s colorful painting in black and white…

PROGRAM :

Van Goghby Alain Resnais (France, 1947)
Documentary, 18 mins
This film tries to trace, only with the help of his works, the life and spiritual adventure of one of the greatest modern painters. If the genius and importance of Vincent van Gogh are universally recognized today, the artist had to struggle and work desperately, in misery and in the midst of almost general indifference, to try to achieve through his painting the absolute he foresaw.

A Muse by Van Gogh**by Thiago Pedroso and Rafael Frazão (Brazil, 2013)**
Fiction, 15 mins
The center of São Paulo becomes the stage of a stranger’s nocturnal journey. His meeting with a storyteller taxi driver and a gypsy lady, mystical or bogus, are marked by poor communication…

Mona Lisa Descending a Staircaseby Joan C. Gratz (United States, 1992)
Animation, 7 mins
Using morphing and painted clay, an animation technique she pioneered, Joan C. Gratz explores the works of 35 icons of modern art, from Vincent van Gogh to Pablo Picasso via Andy Warhol, and puts showcasing a century of artistic creation.

Vincent 2, the return by Xavier Coton (France, 1991)
Fiction, 23 mins
The Hollywood title of this short film announces a hypothetical return of Vincent van Gogh to Arles in the nineties. The director plays with anachronisms and offers the opportunity to discover Theo and Vincent communicating by telephone…

Burrby Donato Sansone (France, 2018)
Animation, 5 mins
Bavure depicts the evolution of a being, from its creation to its awareness of the mysteries of the universe, and offers a metaphor for the creation of the world coupled with a parable on artistic creation.
