FKA Twigs: “being positive can take you a long way”

Is named Tahliah Debrett Barnett (Cheltenham, 1988), but you most likely know her by her stage name: FKA Twigs. This British singer (and actress, dancer, and composer…) has been making waves in Spain for years with her experimental pop-electronic songs like ‘Two Weeks’ or ‘Cellophane’. She has also starred in a very ‘hot’ TikTok video kissing Aron Piper that has gone viral and you probably remember her for being Robert Pattinson’s ex-girlfriend. But if there is something for which many identify and recognize her instantly, it is for your particular aesthetic, which combines the ‘fairycore aesthetic’ in an ethereal and avant-garde version. Therefore, it is not surprising that it is often part of the best dressed lists of the Grammys or the MET Gala.

FKA Twigs is part of a generation of artists who not only make music, but feel deeply connected to their work, almost on a spiritual level. For the singer, being faithful to her music and dedicating time to creating something special and disruptive is essential, that’s why is the image of the new Viktor&Rolf perfume, Good Fortune. We take this opportunity to speak with FKA Twigs about the power of manifesting our ‘fortune’, the influence of spirituality in her music and her latest album, ‘Caprisongs’, as well as her interpretation of beauty. And pay attention because there is much to discover about the Capricorn of the moment.

You are the image of the new perfume of Viktor&Rolf, Good Fortune. The brand is often defined as provocative and constantly evolving. It reminds us a bit of your music, how do you feel connected to the brand?

Viktor&Rolf is an incredibly creative firm. I have always loved their work because it is very surreal and they value imagination, so I feel connected as an artist. They always have something new to offer. They have managed to create an iconic fragrance that is Flower Bomb and now they have done it again with Good Fortune. This is because they have stayed true to themselves and dedicated their time to developing the perfume. It took them no less than ten years, that’s why it’s so authentic and it is something that we also have in common: I am not in a hurry to create my art. It is very important to take your time when you intend to create such an amazing piece of art that will connect with so many people.

The theme of the new Viktor&Rolf fragrance is: “I see my future, I create my own destiny and it is full of good fortune.” Do you believe in the power to manifest the universe?
Hmm… Yes and no, up to a point. I believe that being positive and a good person can really change your life. Obviously, there are circumstances in life that we cannot control and some people are born in an environment and under conditions that will not change no matter how much they manifest it. But I think that being positive can go a long way, because it puts you in the right attitude to see and take advantage of the opportunities that come your way.

Would you say you are a spiritual person?

Yes, I would say that I am a very spiritual person and it has definitely influenced my artistic vision. I think it shows in my songs because I put that spiritual note in my art. For me it is what helps me stay true to myself, looking inside myself.

-This year you released your new album, ‘Caprisongs’, inspired by your zodiac sign. What Capricorn trait defines you the most?

Loyalty, I am a very loyal person. Sometimes it can become detrimental because I am so stubborn about making things work and I always want to help people. But staying authentic and true to my work is very important to me and a very Capricorn trait.

I am a very loyal person, especially to my music.

You have a very ethereal and particular style when it comes to dressing and putting on makeup. How do fashion and beauty help you transform yourself?

I love using makeup to create new characters of myself, like avatars. It helps me create the image that I visualize from my music and I really enjoy the process of transforming myself into another person or being. I love to change my ‘look’ all the time, it’s very exciting, it’s a way of exploring different parts of me. Of course, I conceive it in a more artistic way; I don’t do my makeup every day, but when I do I try to express something more dramatic, that expresses something.

We’ve seen you pole dance in the ‘Tears in the Club’ video clip and on your TikTok account, has it helped you in any way?

Yes, definitely. But beyond helping me connect with my femininity, like many women, she has helped me connect with my body and feel more confident about myself. When I do ‘pole dance’ I feel better than ever, like when I perform on stage. I think I started because I was going through a lot of physical and mental pain, so I was looking for a new discipline to explore those feelings that I was going through.

We often see you dance to songs by other female artists on TikTok and you’ve even collaborated with Jorja Smith on your ‘Caprisongs’ album, do you think we’re entering a new era where female artists support each other more?

In my case, I can say that I have never had that feeling of competition with other women artists, but maybe that is just my experience. The truth is that we support each other a lot, even more in private than in the public eye but yes, we have a very good relationship.
