A saint with a very current message

The Municipal Classical and Modern Ballet (BCMM) began its season with the premiere of the symphonic version of “Las moradas de Teresa”, created and choreographed by the company’s director, Miguel Bonnin. In the functions of Friday and Saturday there was a full house in the Municipal Theater. Today there will be another opportunity to see it, at 19:00.

The director of the company, in line with his spirituality, began to develop original ballet works inspired by the lives of saints, whose experiences have shown dedication, sacrifice and, moreover, have been challenging in their time.

In that line of pieces like “Francesco”, “Roque Marangatu” Y “Spiritual exercises”, “The dwellings of Teresa” delve into the experiences of Saint Teresa of Avilashowing us through attractive dance pictures the reality that he went through.

This staging, which premiered in 2015, now has the added value of being presented for the first time with the National Symphony Orchestra (OSN) live and, in these functions that passed, under the direction of the Spanish Jose Miguel Evoracomposer of all the music of the wonderful setting.

In addition, this premiere coincides with two very significant celebratory milestones: 50 years of the BCMM and also, 400 years since the canonization of Saint Teresa of Ávilawhich are fulfilled in this 2022.

love towards the other

In the premiere function, last Friday, before a large and effusive audience, this work was presented that shines for offering great care in every detail: scenery, costumes, lighting, and the neat and lively sound of the OSN.

With all of this working flawlessly, a cast is needed to elevate the staging even more, and that is something that is fulfilled by the efficiency of this company, which in this function had as protagonists Giannina Fernandezwho managed to build a moving and inspiring story of Saint Teresa, already Abel Rivarolawho incarnated a compassionate and luminous Christ.

It is gratifying to see that this combination of an excellent technique and an exciting interpretation can be achieved, and thus both knew how to take the public through lands full of sensitivity even within the darkest and most painful moments that the saint is going through.

Another of the high points of this work is that we meet the character in her development with a Teresa, girl, adolescent and adult, and we can even see her in that adulthood being played by a dancer, an actress (achieved by a solid Margarita Irun) and a singer (the magnetic Evora Gala).

That all those in charge of being under Teresa’s skin have known how to consolidate an emotion, even from a child and adolescent, to showing that passage to adulthood with everything that happened in her life, demonstrates the level of commitment of the artists to tell this story.

What could the life of a saint leave us for these times? In addition to leaving the work moved, it is something that we can take with us when we meet her: that of not losing sight of the values that make us human and supportive of that other, just like us.
