Isaac Aranguré, the filmmaker who will bring the flavor of Sinaloa to all of Mexico

MAZATLAN. – Have you ever thought about changing the course of your life? Doing something that makes you happier? Or simply do different things for the good of yours and your community? That was what Isaac Aranguré Valdés did, who went from being a teacher to a politician to become the creative director of a documentary that talks about Sinaloa gastronomy.

From a young age he always had that creativity, vision and that desire to do something different, at the age of 26 he left his job as a teacher to start a new adventure that, without knowing it, would provide him with the answer he was looking for. He ran as an independent candidate for District 21 in Mazatlan.

Isaac says that entering politics was a very learning process that helped him realize all the ways in which he could participate and help influence the public sphere, and that these were beneficial for citizens.

“I personally wanted to influence public affairs, and I said, well, let’s see if it can be done through this system and this new figure that is the independent candidacy. I had personal concerns that I wanted to achieve. It was a super nice candidacy, from which I learned a lot of things”.

And although he did not win the nomination, his interest was heightened more than ever. He wanted more and was going to go for more, his desire to grow in every way and to continue contributing to citizens could no longer be satisfied from a classroom. For this reason, he decided to put aside that area in his life to start something bigger than being the creative firm Tumbleweed.

“I knew that if I went back to that executive scheme I was going to lose what I had gained publicly with this freedom to participate, because once you are in an organization you have to respect their schedules, it is difficult to remain publicly active. So we started with this creative firm, and in addition to advertising we looked for a way to continue with the political discourse”.

That thought led Isaac and a friend named Adrián López, executive director of Noroeste, to give life to a project where those concerns that he had been dragging would vanish. They wanted to change the conversation in the state and throughout Mexico, to change the perspective of Sinaloa. But how to do it? was the question that was always on their mind, until they found the ideal format to do it.

The project had to talk about Sinaloa, that was obvious, and what is it that most characterizes it? Its gastronomy and it is then that “What does Sinaloa taste like” was born.

“So I said, where does everything that I like converge? art, journalism, public affairs, messages, social action and storytelling; everything comes together in documentaries. So we started with short documentaries until we were able to tell a story, but a bigger one.”

What does Sinaloa taste like? It is a documentary series that began to be prepared in 2019, but it was not finished cooking until 2021. It consists of eight chapters and each one of them is starred by a renowned chef from the region.

The central objective was to create something that would promote the advantages enjoyed by the state, such as exquisite cuisine and to show that Sinaloa has much more to offer as an entity, and eliminate the image that there is only insecurity and violence here.

To achieve the documentary they toured the 18 municipalities, from Escuinapa, in the south, to El Fuerte, in the north. The protagonists of this series are eight renowned chefs from Sinaloa: Diego Becerra, Daniel Taniyama, Julián Portugal, Héctor Peniche, Andrea Lizárraga, Omar Serrano, María Dolores Balderrama and Luis Osuna. They are the ones who will show the spectator the delicious dishes that characterize us so much and for which we are recognized internationally.

In the series, Sinaloans will appreciate the landscapes of the land of the 11 rivers, its beaches, its roads, incredible landscapes, restaurants and kitchens, where the most delicious typical dishes of our region are created.

When it premieres? This coming June 7, people will be able to enjoy it through the Cinépolis Klic platform.
