Georgie Henleywho still plays and recently played Henry VIII’s sister Margaret Tudor in The Spanish Princesshe said in the post that he hid these scars in the professional field. However now he has decided to share them with the world, using the caption: “Finally free.”
“It took me a long time to heal both physically and mentally, but I was hoping that someday the right time would come to talk about what happened. Today is a start. For the past nine years I have been open about my scars in my personal life, but have completely hidden them in any professional context. I wore bandages or covers, makeup on set and on stage, long sleeves whenever I needed to be photographed, pants so I could put my hand in my pocket.
The industry that I am part of often focuses on a very narrow idea of what is considered aesthetic ‘perfection’. I was afraid that my scars would prevent me from finding work. The truth is that there is no such thing as ‘perfection’, but I have lived with the shame of feeling different, exacerbated by the expectations that came from the beginning of my career at a young age. My scars are not something to be ashamed of. They are a map of the pain my body has endured and, most importantly, a reminder of my survival. They don’t affect my ability as an actor, and I’m proud to be someone who has visible scars in this industry. “
