The Rom de Aguilar closes its summer activities by revealing some curiosities of Romanesque Palencia.

The museum, managed by Fundación Santa María la Real, proposes two new routes this Friday and Saturday. The first to get to know the Romanesque of the Santullán Valley and the second to discover the ‘Curiosities of the Palencia Romanesque’.

The Rom Exhibition Center, located in the monastery of Santa María la Real, ends its program of summer cultural activities this weekend, with two new “Romanesque routes” and a last theatrical visit at night, this Friday at 10 p.m.

On Friday, August 26, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the ‘Romanesque of the Santullán Valley’ route will take place, in which the churches of San Cornelio and San Cipriano de Revilla de Santullán, Santa María la Real in Cillamayor and Santa Marina de Villanueva de la Torre.

That same day, starting at 10 p.m., the gentleman Bernardo del Carpio and Doña Ofresa will say goodbye to the Monastery of Santa María la Real, in Aguilar de Campoo, after spending the whole summer showing the monastery to the people who have participated in the nightly dramatized visits, which have been held every Friday in July and August.

Curiosities of the Palencia Romanesque

On Saturday, August 27, the Rom proposal will be double again. In the morning, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be a tour of ‘The medieval past of Aguilar de Campoo’ and in the afternoon, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., it will be the turn of a very interesting route that will explain the ‘ Curiosities of Romanesque Palencia’.

In this new route, the churches of Matalbaniega, Villavega de Aguilar and the hermitage of Santa Cecilia de Aguilar de Campoo will be visited. In this last, “Aspects as interesting as, for example, alquerques and games arranged in the church or the use of a heraldic shield in a Romanesque capital, an unusual aspect, will be discovered”explains Cristina Párbole, route guide.

Special visits to the monastery

To all these activities, we must add, throughout July and August, two special visits to the monastery to investigate its history from a different point of view. On Mondays and Thursdays, knowing ‘feminine importance’ in the monastery; and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays discovering their “hidden face”, in a tour that reviews its most curious or unknown elements. Both visits will have a single pass at 12:00.

‘Illuminated Romanesque’ by Laura Alberich

In addition, those who come to the museum can enjoy the exhibition Illuminated Romanesque by Laura Alberich, which can be visited until October 15. In this exhibition, the artist recreates, through medieval techniques and using natural pigments, images full of color, inspired by the canonical tradition, mythology or the Romanesque bestiary. Twenty works for “help the visitor to appreciate art and rediscover the spirituality of the Romanesque and Mozarabic”.
