What happened at the end of The White Lotus 2 and why did the series creator decide to kill THAT character off?
HBO Max premiered on Monday, December 12, the seventh and final episode of the second season of The White Lotus. The fiction ends with a shocking death that creator Mike White has explained.

Tanya realizes that Greg has conspired with Quentin to kill her and take her money. After discovering her plan, the protagonist manages to take the weapon that Niccoló was going to use to kill her and she kills him, as well as killing Didier and Quentin.

Once she’s finished with the group and out of danger, Tanya is trapped on the yacht. She tries to jump into a small boat prepared to go to shore, but she falls to her death. She later reveals that the corpse that Daphne discovers in the first chapter is Tanya’s.
In a behind-the-scenes video that HBO aired after the episode, White explained that the entire plot of Tanya season 2 was built around her death. “At the end of last season, Tanya is sitting down with Greg in the last episode and he’s talking about her health issues and she’s like, ‘I’ve had all kinds of treatments over the years. Death is the last immersive experience I haven’t tried.’ And I was thinking that it would be really fun to bring Tanya back because she’s a great character, but maybe That is the journey for her, a journey to death.” said.

“It’s not that I really wanted to kill off Tanya because I love her as a character and I obviously love Jennifer Coolidge. But I thought we were going to Italy, she’s a diva, a larger-than-life female archetype, so we could come up with an operatic conclusion to Tanya’s life and her story,” she added.
However, it was important to White that Tanya not die at the hands of someone else. “I just think that his death at the hands of someone else was too tragic. She needed to do her best and somehow have some kind of victory over whoever was conspiring to get rid of her. So she made me laugh to think that she would eliminate the assassin cabal and after successfully doing so, she would die like this. That’s very Tanya,” she expounded.
HBO has already given the green light to season 3 of The White Lotus, and since this is an anthology series, the plan is for there to be a new location and new characters. However, White hinted that the new episodes could reference Greg’s murder plot.

“I think as far as what’s going on with Greg and Tanya’s death conspiracy, you might think Portia’s scared enough to let it be, but the fact that all those guys die on the ship indicates that someone will dig until they get to Greg,” he suggested.
“The first season was about money, the second season is about sex, and I think the third season is going to be maybe some kind of funny, satirical look at death and oriental religion and spirituality, it seems like it could be a rich tapestry to make another batch of The White Lotus,” added White.
