Bari in Jazz proposes two appointments in Bari and Torre a Mare. It starts on 2 August with Arooj Aftab for the first time in Italy with a summer tour in August. Arooj Aftab, winner of the “Best Global Music Performance” with “Mohabbat2 at the Grammy Awards 2022, is a refined composer whose sound fluctuates between classic minimalism and new age, Sufi devotional poetry and electronic trance with jazz structures. Precisely this unmistakable style of hers made her famous in Pakistan at the beginning of the 2000s; she subsequently moved to the United States, where she currently lives and where she graduated from the prestigious Berklee School of Music. He has three albums to his credit, Bird under water (2015), Siren islands (2018) and his latest work Vulture Prince has been praised as one of the best releases of 2021 by the likes of The Guardian, NPR, TIME receiving a huge critical consensus. Arooj has collaborated with world famous artists such as Meshell Ndegeocello, Esperanza Spalding, DJ / rupture and Abida Parveen just to name a few. She has performed her music of hers in major venues such as Lincoln Center, Highline Ballroom, Le Poisson Rouge and the Museum of Modern Art in New York; she has also been invited to perform in festivals such as The Big Ears Festival, The Ecstatic Music Festival and SF Jazz Festival. And this seems to be just the beginning of a brilliant and rapidly growing musical career for her. The second appointment is instead with Cristina Donà the August 18 in Torre a Mare. Born in 1967, Donà has helped to define a new season of Mediterranean rock and is one of the few Italian artists capable of “rivaling” the great colleagues who have reinvented the model of interpreter and author abroad. Always able to renew herself, she first became a point of reference and then an inspirational figure for the new generations of Italian musicians. The most recent project of the Donà is instead want, together an album and a concert in collaboration with Ponderosa Music & Art. The singer-songwriter herself says of the album: “deSidera took shape in these times of opaque horizons and confused ideas. She is a wild creature, who observes human beings with her head slightly tilted and eyes wide open, while she investigates the dual nature of desire, in order to better understand who we are ”. The homonymous concert is an opportunity to appreciate the evocative capacity of the album as well as the unconventional arrangements, together with Cristina Donà the musician and producer Saverio Lanza performs on stage.

In the fourth edition of the Nino Rota Awardwhose mission is to make an ex-cursus in the world of music for images, all in the name of one of our most illustrious fellow citizens, the great Nino Rota, is scheduled for 19 and 20 August in Torre a Mare. The recognition dedicated to the great composer, born in Bari by adoption, will therefore be awarded to young composers who are particularly active in the search for new linguistic solutions, innovative approaches that are establishing themselves in cinema as in TV series: Mattia Vlad Morleo (2000), Giancane, Ginevra Nervi and finally Pilvio & Aldo De Scalzi. On the first day the Prize will be awarded to two young composers who almost by chance crossed the soundtrack on their way. The very young composer and pianist Mattia Vlad Morleo (2000), decided towards a career as an interpreter starting at the age of 17, who with his refined and original touch immediately appeared particularly evocative. Short films, commercials and important documentaries for Rai Storia, but also very important awards such as the nomination for the Hollywood Music in Media Awards “(Los Angeles) and the victory of the Akademia Awards” (New York). In 2020 at the Rome Film Festival the consecration with the soundtrack of “Santa immediately” by Alessandro Piva (winner of the edition). On the same day, the one who surely can be defined as the tourist by chance of the soundtrack will be awarded. Giancane, leader of a Roman indie band, has in fact written the original music for “Strappare along the edges” the graphic novel by his friend Zerocalcare. Apparently a fortuitous episode which, however, given the great success of the series, immediately aroused the attention of the “celluloid” world for what has been defined as a “skilful framework capable of evoking the particular context of the story”.

On the second day of the award, the award will go to one of the few women who make up for the cinema. Geneva Nervia young composer, songwriter and producer of electronic music born in Genoa in 1994, in the last part of her short but intense career she was able to courageously establish a very interesting and innovative relationship between cinema and music: an electronic that is never banal and enveloping, seasoned from vocals, which marks a distinctive trait compared to the Italian soundtrack model not very accustomed to musical textures totally declined on the synthetic side. In fact, Ginevra Nervi, in addition to having composed soundtracks for short films, is the author of original songs for various series and films that have earned her two nominations for David di Donatello. The last prize of this second edition will go to one of the important couples of Italian cinema: Pilvio & Aldo De Scalzi. There are over two hundred soundtracks written for cinema and series by these two eclectic Genoese musicians who have ranged far and wide in musical genres. Started as a point of reference for the Italian new prog in 1997, they crossed paths with Ferzan Ozpetek for whom they composed the music of Hammam, the Turkish bath. From there began one of the most prolific careers in all of Italian cinema and television, which saw them collaborate with many directors.

Finally the 2 Septemberin Piazza Roma in Santo Spirito, Mirko Signorile presents in “A part of me” solo piano. The experience lived in recent years with the lockdown has inspired the pianist Mirko Signorile to compose new pieces imbued with poetry, lyricism and spirituality. “A part of me” is a dreamy concert that suspends time to make room for a sober musical narrative, where the necessary becomes the focus and climax of the entire performance. Atmospheres of new classicism and jazz pervade the black and white keys and meet the electronic sounds of the synth that forms the carpet and glue of the different musical stories. A concert to be experienced in one breath, magical and cinematic

All the appointments of Festa del Mare 2022 will take place in compliance with the anti-COVID regulations.
