Dostoevsky And Fausto Malcovati

The meeting of Saturday 6 August dedicated to literature: at the center of the scene there is Fyodor Dostoevsky. In 2021, the two hundredth year of his birth fell and his works were celebrated everywhere with conferences, meetings and ad hoc publications.

This year, the figure of the greatest Russian writer got caught up in the controversy surrounding the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Speaking of Dostoevsky now therefore means taking a look at the Russian angels and demons, and to do so is Fausto Malcovati, one of the most authoritative Italian Slavists, professor of Russian language and literature at the State University of Milan, author of the recent essay “An idea by Dostoevskij” (Cuepress).

The Russian author’s novels are populated by powerful characters: in some cases for their extraordinary inner strength and profound spirituality, in others for their arrogance, perversion, violence. The conflict between good and evil, between the will to overcome one’s contradictions and the fragility with which one indulges one’s vices, is constant in all novels.

The path of righteousness is tiring, it is tiring to fully assume responsibility for one’s actions: but this is the path that those who want to reach maturity, wisdom must undertake. So there is the path of angels and that of demons: we are endowed with free will, Dostoevsky tells us, it is up to us to choose.

Fausto Malcovati he is professor of Russian Language and Literature at the University of Milan, translator and theater critic, and one of the leading experts in Russian theater and culture.

In addition to having translated all of Chekhov’s theater and having worked on the theoretical writings of the main masters of directing, such as Stanislavskij, he has dealt with Russian fiction of the second half of the nineteenth century, with monographs and essays dedicated to Gogol ‘, Dostoevskij, Tolstoj .

In 2016 he won the Ubu award for the value of his research.
