Wines and abbeys, the story never told in an event in Fossanova

Tastings and conferences to tell the importance of monasteries in handing down precious vines to the present day. From 2 to 4 September over twenty wineries present and an international guest

The history of the wine linked to the most important abbeys in Italy: caskets of knowledge, spirituality, but also places that have allowed precious vines to reach up to the present day. This will be discussed on the occasion of “Wines of Abbey», The event that will take place from 2 to 4 September 2022 in the scenario of the Borgo di Fossanova in Priverno (Latina).

To the topic «Wine between history and territory»Is dedicated to the meeting that will open the event on Friday 2 September at 6 pm, with the participation of Enrica OnoratiCouncilor for Agriculture of the Lazio Region, Marcello Masiauthor and presenter of the Rai1 program Green Line, Marco Carpinetipresident of the Latina Wine Route, Rocco Tolfa, Tg2 journalist. The television author will lead the meeting Isabella Peruginiintroduced by the greetings of Annamaria Libramayor of Priverno.

Following, the opening of the Abbey Wines Exhibition set up at the Infermeria dei Conversi Auditorium: the story and the link with the monks’ residences will be told of each winery present at the event. The protagonists of the event will be the abbeys, monasteries and convents located throughout the Italian territory: starting from Alto Adige, with the presence ofNovacella Abbeythe one of Muri-Gries and of the Cantina Valle Isarco which takes care of the vineyards of Sabiona Monastery; L’Praglia Abbey – Benedictine monastery of the province of Padua – el‘Busco Abbey of Veneto; L’Rosazzo Abbey of Friuli Venezia Giulia, whose millenary vineyards are entrusted to the Cantina Livio Felluga.

Tuscany is represented by the Badia di Passignano (Vallombrosa Abbey), whose historic cellars are in use by the Antinori family and since Monastery of the White Friars of Fivizzano (Massa Carrara); while Umbria and its link between wine and religion will be told by the Azienda Agricola Arnaldo Caprai and by Monastery of Bosewith grapes grown in the lands of the Monastery of San Masseo at the foot of the historic center of Assisi.

Lazio is well representedwith the artisanal wines of the Monastery of the Trappist nuns of Vitorchianofrom‘Valvisciolo Abbey di Sermoneta and the wines produced in the Pontine territory with the wineries that adhere to the Latina Wine Route: Sant’Andrea, Marco Carpineti, Casale del Giglio, Cincinnato, Pietra Pinta, La Valle dell’Usignolo, Villa Gianna, Donato Giangirolami.

In Campania, the Feudi di San Gregorio Winery wanted to dedicate one of their most important wines toGoleto Abbey which, founded in 1133 in Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi, saved the native Campania vines Greco di Tufo, Fiano and Aglianico in the Middle Ages; also present theCrapolla Abbey of Vico Equense. International guest the group Les Grands Chais de Francewith the Francois Martenot brand, which will tell the extraordinary historical and cultural wine heritage of Burgundy, with the renowned wines of the Hospice de Beaune.

In the Sala del Refettorio of the Abbey, on Friday 2 September at 8 pm, Cedric Dechelette, of the Maison François Martenot, will be the protagonist of the Master Class with tasting of Burgundy wines by Hospices de Beaune. The event is organized by Pro loco di Sabaudia and Passione di Vino association, in collaboration with Slowine, Strada del Vino di Latina, Pro Loco di Priverno, with the contribution of the Lazio Region, Arsial, the Municipality of Priverno and the Management Regional Museum of Lazio.

Over twenty wineries selected with the collaboration of Slow Wine will participate in the three days, which will take place right in the cloister of the Abbey from 6 to 10 pm. The tastings will also alternate with moments of confrontation aimed at discovering the connections of this type of wine with the historical periods and cultural realities in which they were born. In addition to the meeting dedicated to Burgundy wines, two other Master Classes are scheduled: Saturday 3 September at 8 pmthe manufacturer Marco Caprai will tell Sagrantino from its origins, linked to San Francesco, to today’s international success. During the Master Class some of his most famous wines will be tasted.

Sunday 4th September at 8 pm, the producer Nazzareno Milita della Strada del Vino di Latina, will talk about the wines of the Pontine territory, with a tasting of some of its excellences. «We are very proud to bring such an important historical story to the knowledge of all. The event is one of a kind and we are sure that it will bring to light a real cultural heritage to be reaffirmed and defended. Being able to do it in a historical, artistic and religious scenario like the Fossanova Abbey, founded by the Cistercian friars from Burgundy and where, among other things, St. Thomas Aquinas died, gives the event a unique charm ” , explain Gennaro di Leva, president of the Pro Loco of Sabaudia and Massimo Bevilacqua, president of the «Passion of Wine» Association.
