How did the devotion to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart arise?
The Father Julius Chevalierfounder of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Issoudun, France, gave the name to the Blessed Virgin in 1857.
His intention was to give the mother of Jesus the position as the most important among all women in the Heart of God. It is the reason why He chose her as the mother of men, guide to the heart of his Son and his divine advocate.
There have been several related images, but in all of them the presence of Jesus with Mary stands out. His heart stands out on the child’s body, touched with one hand while pointing to his mother with the other.
Prayer to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, advocate of desperate causes
When Fr. Chevalier spread the faith of the new Marian invocation, he did so with the hope that it would become patron saint of difficult and desperate causes, spiritual and material, because she is the most powerful intercessor: “Advocate of difficult and desperate causes”.
The original prayer to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is titled “remember“. Its author was P. Chevalier himself.
