from Turin editorial staff

The Albertina of Turin is one of the oldest Academies of Fine Arts in Italy and houses an important collection of works of ancient art, created from the 15th to the 20th century. In collaboration with the Carlo Acutis Foundation he proposes Faces in the Face, an exhibition / workshop to explore the theme of the face of Christ in art. Treasures usually inaccessible to the public will be exhibited in a path on the history of art and spirituality. The exhibition is sponsored by the Piedmont Region and the City of Turin.

Meticulous Renaissance and Caravaggesque paintings, precious Gaudenzian drawings usually not exposed to the public and fascinating multimedia installations are the ingredients of the “Faces in the Face” project which is not just an exhibition, but aims to welcome the public in the dimension of a laboratory artistic.

Thanks to the fundamental support of the Carlo Acutis Foundation and the Council for the Enhancement of Artistic and Cultural Heritage of Turin, it was in fact possible to involve the best students and the best students of the Academy in the creation of paintings that have taken shape for this project, in installations immersive scenography and other enhancement activities that the public will be able to discover next to the collections of the Pinacoteca.

The Carlo Acutis Foundation was born from reflections on the role and economic and social responsibility of an entrepreneurial family and from the life witness of Blessed Carlo Acutis. The creation of value must be accompanied by ethical growth and attention to the needs and dignity of people. The Foundation’s mission is to promote the development and coordination of public utility initiatives. The goal is to restore dignity and hope to people in difficulty, to take care of the territory by means of social support projects, to support culture, with particular interest in those activities focused on historical, artistic and scientific research assets that are combined with a social purpose.

On the occasion of the European meeting of the Taizé Community, in Turin from 7 to 10 July 2022, the Foundation wants to offer young people from countries of the entire continent the experience of ‘faces in the face’, an artistic journey focused on the Holy Face, to which is added the availability of educational workshops conducted by the Academy.

The story of the exhibition on the history of art is confronted with the image of the Shroud which, kept in Turin, has greatly inspired the iconography of the face of Christ over the centuries. The image of a man whose cause of death by crucifixion is identifiable is visible on the Shroud cloth. For this reason, the Shroud has also inspired and continues to inspire Christian art and represents an interesting point of comparison with the works of the exhibition.

The exhibition at the Pinacoteca Albertina can be visited every weekday and holidays from 10 to 18 (last admission at 17.30) except Wednesday, the day it is closed. Info: Tel. 0110897370 | email: pinacoteca.albertina@coopculture.it | www.pinacotecalbertina.it.
