This Spanish monastery offers girls a unique weekend

The Premostratensian Canons of Santa Sofía de Toro (Zamora) open the doors of their homes and their lives to allow the participants to live a different spiritual experience

The Premostratensian monastery of Santa Sofía de Toro, in the province of Zamora, the only female monastery of the Order in Spain, launches a unique proposal: it opens its doors to girls who wish to share a weekend with the cloistered nuns.

“Girl, come and see”, begins by saying the invitation of the nuns echoed by the Closing Foundation.

“You will leave happy!”

«The Premonstratensian Canons invite you to live an experience with the community that will not leave you indifferent. You will come out happier!”, assure the nuns.

The meeting will take place from September 2 to 4. «We are preparing it with great enthusiasm», confess the Premonstratensian Canons». And they conclude by addressing the interested parties: «Make up your mind! You will come out happier!”

During the days of conviviality, the participants will discover, among other things, the generosity of the sisters who, next to the doors of their homes, will open the doors of their lives, sharing their oratory, their food, their experience of religious life, in a atmosphere full of spirituality, joy and silence.

The participants will be able, from serenity, to think calmly and put a little order in what is important: family, studies, work, friendships or spirituality.

from 1162

The sisters propose these meetings since 2016, when they celebrated seven hundred years of uninterrupted religious life in the Monastery, although the community of canons has existed since 1162.

This community belongs to the Premonstratensian Order, founded by Saint Norbert, in 1121, in the Premontré valley (France). Saint Norbert proposed to live by putting everything in common, like the first community in Jerusalem.

Monasteries need “groundbreaking” initiatives

In an interview previously granted to Aleteia.org, the priest Juan Carlos Ortega LC, director of the CLAUNE Pontifical Institute, erected by the Vatican Dicastery for the Institutes of Consecrated Life, in favor of contemplative life, was favorable to this type of initiative «groundbreaking» with which cloistered monasteries create new ties with young women.

«They have managed to find ways to approach and make themselves known to society and the Church, remaining faithful to their own spirit. They have managed to find ways to be able to share their lives », he explained.

Young people interested in participating in the weekend can obtain more information by calling 980 690324. Places are limited. As the sisters say on the invitation poster: “It’s a gift.”
