Saint Emeterius and Saint Celedonius

San Emeterio and San Celedonio, martyred during Diocletian’s persecution for abandoning the Roman legions and converting to Christianity, have been patron saints of Santander since 1791.

His relics arrived in Cantabria in the High Middle Ages, to protect them from Arab invasions, and remained hidden under the current church of El Cristo until excavations carried out in 1531 brought them to light.
