Looking back to find love? Prime Video’s dating series, The One That Got Away, pairs a group of six romance-seeking contestants with lost connections from their past.
The reality series, which launched on the streaming platform in June 2022, followed six singles looking for love. While hoping to eventually find The One during their tenure in the dating experiment, host Betty Who revealed in the first episode that all of their suitors would be familiar faces. The stars of the show hooked up with former friends, unrequited crushes in high school and even one-off flames after arriving at the retreat through a “portal”.
“I left the season feeling very optimistic about the ways people can change and show themselves for you,” the “Somebody Loves You” singer told The List before the series premiere. “It’s something that’s really exciting for me, and probably the advice I’d give is that people can really change. You have to give people a chance to show you who they are now, and that’s a really special part, and we’re going to see a lot of them this season of The One That Got Away.
He added: “I will say that there is a weak point that I felt about [contestant] Jeff [Perla] and his plot to find himself. I don’t want to reveal any spoilers, but there are a couple of moments where I was actually rooting for Jeff, and I was watching him behind the scenes. [and saying to him], ‘You have this, baby.’ If there was a competitor that I seemed to have a close eye on, it could have been Jeff ”.
During the show, travel blogger Jeff struggled to open up to his potential matches, including his former confirmation classmate Anthony, his colleague Micah, and his longtime friend Alex Van Gurp.
“I found the people who [come] through [the portal] bring you back to what you were then… and when I saw him go through this he gave me [this] wave of ‘OMG, that’s how I felt,’ ”Jeff admitted during the first episode. “It was really interesting trying to explore every single person and relationship and how they came into your life to begin with.”
Elsewhere on the show, viewers met model Allyssa Anderson, who was ready to settle down and get married.
“I am a great advocate of spirituality. I think in many ways this was just a serendipity, ”she gushed to the camera. “I felt that when this show was presented to me it was a stroke of fate, and I really had to take that leap and not look back.”
Despite attempting to pursue contact with his former high school crush, his school bus buddy and an Instagram fan, it was family friend Adam Drexler who won his heart.
“This is a promise to you that whatever happens and no matter where life takes us, I will always support you and always be there for you,” Adam gushed during the finale, presenting her with a promise ring as they walked out through the portal together.
