The miracle of peace in Ukraine

Even in our era marked by the dictatorship of relativism, hit by Covid and stained by fratricidal wars, Eucharistic miracles continue to question people on the theological and social significance of the Eucharist. In Ukraine there is a war that is military, economic And a war for bread that risks starving entire nations poor people for whom not receiving the grain means not being able to feed on the same bread, break it and share it. Priests and lay people who not only experienced this evolution day after day, but above all they had direct experience of the miracle as a concrete sign of their faith.

For example a Bolsena where in the summer of 1263 a Eucharistic miracle took place which had as protagonist a Bohemian priest, named Peter of Prague, who went to Pope Urban IV, who was in Orvieto, to tell him what had happened. The pontiff then sent the bishop of Orvieto to Bolsena to verify the veracity of the story and declared the supernaturality of the event and, to remember it, the11 August 1264 extended to the whole Church the solemnity called Corpus Domini, born in 1247 in the diocese of Liège to celebrate the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. The confreres of the Confraternities of the Blessed Sacrament were required to participate in the moments of monthly community prayer, periodic participation in the Holy Mass and the animation of Eucharistic adoration especially in the so-called “Forty hours”.

The most visible side of the Compagnie del Ss Sacramento was that of accompany the viaticum and the Eucharistic processions especially on the Feast of Corpus Domini, thus underlining the faith of the Church in the real presence of Christ in the sacrament. The XXVII National Eucharistic Congress will be held from 22 to 25 September 2022 in Matera on the theme: “Let’s go back to the taste of bread. For a Eucharistic and Synodal Church “. The celebratory practice and theological reflection teach us that the Church and the Eucharist are strongly united through participation in the table of Christ, when according to the words of Saint Augustine, “made members of his body, we are transformed into the one we have received”. Eucharist and Church appear so closely connected that they are the one real and mystical Body of Christ.
