FROM THE SKY OF BETHLEHEM… PASSING THROUGH THE GOLETO

Marco Storti

The living nativity scene is a show that everyone should see and experience at least once in their life. Close to Holy Christmas, there are many cities, neighborhoods and villages that host real living reproductions of the representation of the birth of Jesus. It was 1209 when St. Francis went to Greccio, and it is precisely here that the Living Nativity was born. The desire to commemorate the birth of Jesus matured in 1223, after the journey that Saint Francis made to Palestine. Greccio, to the Saint of Assisi, remembered Bethlehem, and thus expressed the desire to celebrate Christmas Eve in those places. St. Francis therefore commissioned the castellan Velita to choose a cave, where he would have a manger built, and to lead an ox and a donkey there. According to the hagiographies, during the Mass a child would appear in the manger, whom Saint Francis would hold in his arms. Today, centuries later, the representation of the crib is revived annually on the occasion of the anniversary of the birth of the Lord. This year, in a suggestive scenario like no other, where spirituality touches everyone’s heart, a living Nativity scene will be hosted, the first since its ancient beginnings, right in the Abbey complex of San Guglielmo al Goleto, a monastic complex dating back to the 12th century , founded by San Guglielmo da Vercelli. In the masterful footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi, Don Salvatore Sciannamea, Rector of the Abbey complex, with the support of the Archdiocese of Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi-Conza-Nusco-Bisaccia, has promoted an initiative aimed at experiencing the Christmas of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Cradle of the one “He who is, who was and who is coming…”, to open his heart to the Child God, Salvation of the World. The initiative, promptly welcomed by some of the faithful who frequent the Abbey, was developed and made real in a very short time, with the utmost commitment and enthusiasm. On 26 and 27 December 2022 and 05 January 2023, from 17:00 to 20:00, it will be possible to go back 2000 years, immerse yourself in an unusual day in the city of David (Bethlehem), and witness one extraordinary event, of which there have been and there will be no equal in history, an event that changed the history of humanity. The Goleto Abbey opens its doors and waits for everyone to get to know and welcome Jesus, the Lord of Time and History.
