Social ecology. Milpamerica resists, living solutions to the climate crisis

Latin American Summary, October 11, 2022.

People belonging to indigenous and black peoples in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador are organizing to face the climate crisis in the region, publishing narrative actions between October 10 and 14.

A few weeks before COP27, they make a call to listen to the voices of indigenous and black peoples who are living solutions to the climate crisis.

They call on people of all diversities to sign the “Milpamérica Resiste Declaration”, a Mesoamerican position on climate change.

We are daughters, sons and sons of Mother Earth. Faced with the climatic and civilizational catastrophe that threatens to consume everything that is alive on the planet, we organize ourselves to face extermination. Milpamerica exists because it resists.

People belonging to Afro-indigenous resistance, Garífunas, Lencas, Nawats, Kaqchikel, K’iche’, Q’eqchi’, Chortí, Xinka, Ayuujk, Biinnizá, Nahuas, Ch’oles, Ñuu Savi, Peninsular Mayas, Acolhua, Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Hñatho, Amuzga, Purépecha, Popoluca, Zoque, urban Diasporas and more indigenous nations that today defend their territories throughout Mesoamerica, we organize ourselves to make this call.

The week of October 10 to 14, we join the days of global indigenous resistance. We will publish communication actions every day to emphasize the importance of talking about the climate crisis and the defense of the territory in Mesoamerica from the perspective of indigenous peoples.

On October 12 we call on people of all diversities to join the Declaration of Milpamérica Resiste, a call to join the indigenous and black resistance to face the climate and civilization crisis in this region of the world. As governments and corporations have failed 26 times at the COP, living solutions to the climate crisis are hope for the planet.

We are a history of 500 years of resistance against dispossession. Our grandmothers were raped by colonization, our grandfathers were enslaved by racism. The trains that run over the jungles, the mining companies that split the hills, the oil companies that set the sea on fire, the hydroelectric plants that imprison the rivers, the interoceanic corridors that open cracks in the peninsula, the wind turbines that leave the land is sterile, monocultures that cut through forests, megaprojects that dry up lakes, cities that devour entire towns, religions that demonize our spirituality, borders that cut off the land with barbed wire, Nation States that eradicate diversity, corporations that exterminate us, military and paramilitaries that invade the territory. This, our pain, is the last warning.

In Milpamerica we survived the ecocide and genocide of 500 years, we are going to survive the colonization of the atmosphere that they call climate change.

These days of narrative action are the result of a strategic communication laboratory taught by #HackeoCultural to defenders of the territory in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, in alliance with the Red Futuros Indígenas.

We invite national and international media to join us from October 10 to 14 at the #MilpaméricaResiste conference.
