(ANS – Rome) – “Whoever leads the Salesian administration at the local or national level today takes on a task of great responsibility. The Bursar is like a locomotive pulling the train, even if the Inspector sets the course with his advice. Our economy needs these ‘locomotives of life’ so that the fundamental principles of Don Bosco’s pedagogy – reason, kindness and religion – are always part of the economic action in Salesian institutions ”. The words of Mr. Jean Paul Muller, General Treasurer of the Salesian Congregation, very clearly represent the importance of having the correct settings, visions and projections of the Congregation in the world of the economy; and therefore also explain the importance of the now imminent “SDB Change Congress” (Rome, 19-23 September 2022).

Even if the Congregation’s journey in this field certainly does not begin only now – and in fact the topics that will be addressed at the congress have been the subject of reflection and action for some time in many Provinces around the world – nevertheless the appointment of SDB Change Congress intends to give a strong and regenerative impulse to all the Salesians in the world, to all their collaborators and to those who work for the integral good of young people: the aim is to give definitive words and clear guidelines on some issues that mark and will mark more and more the life of young people in the coming years – Sustainable Economy, Artificial Intelligence, Communication of the future and the Prevention of Corruption – always keeping Spirituality and Salesian leadership firm.

“The themes of this meeting are very interesting – shared in a video Fr Martín Lasarte, Superior of the Vice Province of theAngola -. I would like to focus on two aspects: the first is the fight against corruption, because many countries are having serious problems in terms of transparency. It is a very important issue for us educators, and it starts from our good example in living legally and helping citizens to form honest citizens. The second issue concerns agriculture, which is a topic of relevance for the whole world and particularly for Africa, to diversify the economy and to create in young people this sensitivity towards agriculture as a means of sustenance: both as a means of avoiding the exodus from rural fields to large cities, both to preserve nature, because biodiversity is being lost ”.

The Provincial of Bolivia, Fr Líder Justiniano Flores: “There is a risk that we remain focused on material things to seek answers to current needs. But this is where the General Treasurer comes into play, to remind us that before being Bursars, we are Salesians; before administering the resources to manage the works, we accompany people, our recipients; and we have the mission to show him Jesus and the Gospel ”.

Give her Northern Philippines (FIN), the Provincial Fr Gerardo Martin put his expectations online: “We certainly always need support for our projects and programs and what we expect from the Congregation is to strengthen the network between the Provinces, so that we can share contacts, resources, donors and benefactors and further develop what we do ”.

Finally, he concludes fromItaly, Antonello Vedovato, Salesian Cooperator and Founder of the “Edulife Foundation”, who will be one of the speakers at the SDB Change Congress: “The ecological, social, cultural and spiritual macro-gaps, combined with artificial intelligence technologies and the disruptive economies of the network, all coinciding with a global pandemic phase and with unexpected geopolitical phenomena, make this time an era of exponential and global change. In this challenge, the figure of the Treasurer becomes fundamental to find a new sustainability in respect of the educational dimension and in the management of resources to achieve it. We are part of the largest youth education network in the world. Every day we meet millions of young people in sincere solidarity between generations. Through the eyes of our young people together we can discover new forms of sustainability for the future in knowing how to be, in knowing how to do and in knowing how to act for the common good with the Salesian charism ”.
