The exercises of Ignacio de Loyola.-Validity and limits of his spirituality.-Juan Antonio Estrada.-Publisher Desclée de Brouwer

The Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola are a classic book of spirituality that is still highly topical today, as shown by the many studies on it and its massive use in exercises and retreats. The author of it belongs to the 16th century, is marked by the society and the Church of his time, and tries to respond to the crisis of the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation with the method of his Exercises.

The question is whether your contribution is still valid today and, if so, what are the limits and the complements that it would need to respond to the current problems. A mere analysis of Ignatian spirituality, and of the Jesuit spirituality that has continued it, focused on studying its sources, influences and theological components, would lead to an archeology of the text and would run the risk of answering questions that are not raised today and going from long before the current ones. Hence the need for an aggiornamento, which will necessarily be critical and sometimes provocative and corrective of her work.

It is necessary to receive the spirituality of Ignatius and go beyond it, completing it and allowing oneself to be inspired by the letter and the spirit of his Exercises. Renewing himself so as not to be a museum piece is the dilemma of his book, to which this commentary wants to contribute.
