Rethinking society starting from trust

“Food, throughout its supply chain, in local policies, in its social and political-economic role, is a fundamental and already active tool for rethinking the relationship with the economy, with money, with consumption”: thus Raoul Tiraboschi, Vice President of Slow Food Italyin his speech on the December issue of Terra Nuova magazine.

Here is the text of Raoul Tiraboschi’s speech.

«The challenges that these twenty years have placed on all of us are extraordinarily demanding and complex; they require a profound and radical discernment which starts, in my opinion, above all from the awareness of the role of each of us, of family and emotional networks, of community ones, up to the full recovery of the meaning of active and participatory politics. It is symptomatic that precisely in Italy, in the same days at the end of September, two international events were held and greatly attended, which were only apparently distant: «Terra Madre – Salone del Gusto» organized by Slow Food in Turin and the meeting of young people from «Economy of Francesco» with the presence of Pope Francis in Assisi. Terra Madre 2022 had a huge response from the public and participants, a symptom of the very strong need to get back together. Many institutions (from Ministries to many cities) were also present in an important way with current projects and future challenges. Similarly, the presence of civil society has been instrumental in sharing testimonies, ideas, paths and projects, which have made it clear how necessary it is to place trust in the future. The commitment of Economy of Francesco has placed the emphasis on the need for a radical change in the development model, putting the economy back at the centre, also according to the properly Italian approach of Antonio Genovesi who, first in Europe, covered a Naples in 1754 a chair of Economics. Genovesi believed that the person was the balance of two forces: those of self-interest and social solidarity, highlighting that the person is constitutively made for reciprocity. The market was therefore considered as «mutual assistance», which finds its natural basis in trust in man, in possibilities, in change, in the future. This trust is expressed precisely in sharing, in not holding back, in circulating, in guarding and re-launching. Sharing food is a great political gesture, full of hope and trust. This food becomes part of us: we entrust ourselves to someone else, to the food that someone else has produced. This trust is very significant and symbolic; goes against what is said in the book of Revelation to the angel of Laodicea (a port city in Syria that is still very important today), namely: “You say: ‘I am rich, I got rich, I don’t need anything'” (Apocalypse 3.17). Food, throughout its supply chain, in local policies, in its social and political-economic role, is a fundamental and already active tool for rethinking the relationship with the economy, with money, with consumption».
