Karma Clima is the traveling project of Marlene Kuntz which has led the band from October 2021 throughout Italy, in search of those realities that are a model in the field of eco-sustainability and in the name of the ethical duty to create a sense of responsibility towards the world we live in. I shared the project with Cristiano Godano And Luca Lagash.

Let’s start from the unprecedented project, at least in Italy: nature, art and sustainability can finally contribute to making the world and humanity feel good. In what spirit did you work on the album given the mission?
Cristiano Godano: My goal was to do my best especially for the lyrics that I was more focused on than the music. I took refuge in the mountains for an intense and poetic approach as touching certain themes it is not difficult to fall into banality and didactic phrases. The songs are stages on a journey. We worked on it with dedication and we get compliments not only for the record but for its spirituality. I asked the guys to experiment with the sound as much as they wanted while maintaining intensity and tension.
Luca Lagash: I subscribe to what Cristiano says and I add that such a complex and variegated process has certainly brought about the best conditions for all this intensity to emerge bursting and without limits. Now we reflect on how to carry out cultural projects in our country, on how to encourage urgent exchanges and comparisons that bring results … we answer this question like this, with Karma Climate.
One of the themes of The escape is the growing and erroneous sense of self-absolution: staying beyond meanness don’t you think it can be read as a sense of superiority, that you can be seen as stylites 2.0? I would add that over there beyond the city there are the troubles of humanity: is it responsible to observe them in solitude between hisses and hisses?
Cristiano Godano: It expresses that feeling I was living in that moment. Escape can be cowardly and cowardly but in that song I wanted to stage sovereign disillusionment. The world looks ugly even if nature continues to give us beautiful things, just go and meet it. A feeling of radical disaffection cannot be surprising.
Luca Lagash: It is curious that some interpretations dynamize what they hear and not to change the value of what is around us.
Also in Everything’s quiet I perceive an idea of estrangement from reality, clouding reason and returning to the anthropocene: is peace only at the bottom of the black? Can’t it re-emerge and bring it into our days?
Cristiano Godano: I think it as opposed to The escape. Open space is escape, you can have the sensation of taking flight: here you go in the opposite direction, you go to the center of the earth. There is the part of the self that escapes and the part that remains on the surface to be permeated by the chatter. We stage the metaphorical excavation in the earth.
Luca Lagash: Peace in our world? But first let’s ask ourselves what is peace? Understanding how we can build alternative models, even if building them is hard work and moving outside the dominant parameters is peace for me. Going towards the center of the earth, you impact with these marginal prototypes and you find the right dynamics to go through life in a peaceful way.
What are the connections that can put us in contact with something higher?
Cristiano Godano: Stay in our resistances to create. If you welcome nature, which in turn welcomes you, you feel the superior there, whether it is God or a fertile and creative power. There is a very strong spirituality.
Luca Lagash: We need to tickle a Carmic-cosmic dimension. We measure it on actions and the consequences of acting and thinking. You are assailed by the conditions of being part of something that happened millennia before and thinking about what will happen in a few millennia by entering a meta-human dimension.
Why is it so hard to enjoy ourselves and so easy to see the world burn?
Cristiano Godano: The world is that thing there. In the song the two protagonists are estranged from the world for a day of intense love but are unable to definitively eliminate the thought that its only an ephemeral parenthesis. I am afraid of what is happening, of people’s indifference and indifference. Scientists no longer just say what is happening but we see it around us. In 15 to 20 years in some cities it will no longer be possible to live in the summer without air conditioning. Who can afford it.
Luca Lagash: It is a great act of courage to carve out moments and try to feel a deep and precious awareness of the wonderful experiences we can have.
Starting from Lay Prayer let’s move to a more sacred area: it is said that in the mountains you feel closer to God. How do you relate to faith? After all, bringing the sound of the origin of the world and of men has a very strong sacredness.
Cristiano Godano
: I have a rational impossibility of having faith which is also a limitation because it brings hope. Whoever dies and has faith hopes. The song seeks a dialogue with a muse that we entrust to Elisa. The gods are as many as in the polytheistic tradition. I do not know what is asked of the muse if not the intercession to get to the gods and have a clarification.
Luca Lagash: It is a synthesis to express the law of cause and effect. It’s the only thing I believe in. Cristiano narrates that a hypothetical that a cosmological factor outside of us can still connect with us: it is an intelligent way to deal with faith if one does not escape from the cause / effect relationship.
What relationship do you have with time that does not stop, runs away and is lightning? If you could make a single phone call to say there will be no water, who would you call?
Cristiano Godano: I play with those words and the awareness that I have no tools for a philosophical and physical dispute. Carlo Rovelli says that time does not exist and it is not easy to accept that it does not exist; philosophy has been trying to define it for centuries. We don’t have time: this is the strong message. I would call someone very powerful but not a politician.
Luca Lagash: I would call my niece, the youngest of the family. And it would be a dramatic phone call. We don’t have much time left to sustain our way of life because the planet moves on and will probably expel us.
I like this trip that goes on forever… beyond the irony, would you be ready to face a journey without horizons and without nostos, without return? On the other hand, the essence of Karma Climate it clearly conveys the sense of travel, even if it is not measured in kilometers but in awareness. A way of no return.
Cristiano Godano: The longing for the journey of no return is ne The escape. We follow Karma Climate that we explain in its fascinating complexity. We won’t get anything but at least we do.
Luca Lagash: Even if without return it is a journey, because it is illusory to think of returning to what was before the pandemic. Either you start a different journey and go elsewhere or you accept that satisfactory conditions are no longer established.
The Air and the Soul brings us back to the concept of time, or rather tempus fugit. Moses separated the waters while we will have to stop them and then make them drinkable: if nothing goes well what can we do to make it go well? The images of the grandfather made me think of Il Vecchio e il Bambino by Guccini.
Cristiano Godano
: I’m like Jonathan Frenzen who talks about his resigned frustration: now a process does not stop, the question is how to stem it. I know, informally from Paris, that we are resigned to the two degrees higher on the planet while we should stop at 1.5. War is a radical manifestation that highlights idiocy, nuclear war is possible: it is the idiocy of man.
First ever you played in the Domus Aurea and now there is the tour. How is it structured and how did you think about the lineup? Will you give voice and visibility to the association as you did in the mountain residences?
Cristiano Godano: We’d like. In Milan we had the girls of the Red Gloves who speak the language of signs: it was a very intense moment of sharing. We should host them in another stage. Karma Climate to be played at its best it has to go to theaters, it is not completely exhaustive in sports halls so I believe that we will be at our best between February and March. For now there are 4, 5 pieces with the new sound.
Luca Lagash: Being the first to play at the Domus Aurea is a further sign that our process opens up to dimensions that have not yet been explored. And we aspire to that, to unusual externalizations. Each experience of this type produces new suggestions and we work to make them come true.
