‘Le Pupe

There are 35, all different from each other, with attention to detail and embellished with fine fabrics. ‘Le pupe – Homage to Sant’Agata’, handcrafted creations, unique and collectible pieces made by the women of the Ekta association inaugurate the calendar of Agatine events in the month of August. From an idea of ​​the president of the Committee for the Feast of Sant’Agata, the stylist and entrepreneur Mariella Gennarino, the solidarity initiative was born, the result of the meeting with the president of Ekta Mauro Guarino and the vice president Maria Novara.

“A union of intentions that culminates in love and devotion for our Patron Saint” explains Gennarino present at the press conference with the association, the Rector of San Nicolò l’Arena, Antonio De Maria, the Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Catania, Cinzia Torrisi, the person in charge of the Church of San Nicolò l’Arena, Valentina Noto, the members of the committee and the agatine associations. From the church of San Nicolò l’Arena – where on Wednesday 10th will be exhibited at the same time as the art event, baroque sculptures, music, “La notte delle candelore” – will move on Thursday 11 to Palazzo della Cultura, on the occasion of the theatrical performance “Agata , virgin and martyr “, directed by Pino Pesce, by the Massimo V. Bellini Theater, in collaboration with the committee for the Feast of Sant’Agata (free admission).

The pupae will be kept at the Palazzo della Cultura until the opening of the sale scheduled for December, through a charity auction, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Casa Girls Mothers, as indicated by Archbishop Luigi Renna. “Around the Pupe there is a lot of excitement and positive energy, I can only thank Ekta and the women of the association who worked day and night, in the name of our Agata, to contribute with originality and generosity to the social project”, comments Gennarino passing in review the figures arranged in a row: the tyrant Quinziano, the places of martyrdom, the devotees with the sack, the procession, the pupae inspired by candlesticks. Scrupulously characterized by details that give it a precise identity, colors, looks, laces, applications, smiles. There is even the pregnant devotee. Agata’s life, martyrdom, holiness thus take the forms and face of these specimens, to be kept as precious objects (not suitable for children ed).

“Behind the creation of the pupae there is a meticulous work that passes from the study of the time and from an in-depth research into the type of fabrics and ornaments” explain Novara and Zuccarello, thanking the “hand” who made the reliquary, Maria Lanzafame , positioned in the center between the characters. The message of solidarity goes further, and extends to the victims of femicide. “My thoughts today more than ever, in the light of yet another news of domestic violence, go to the countless women victims of a blind brutality generally on the part of boyfriends, husbands, former companions “, says President Gennarino, who intends to honor the true meaning embodied by Agata of the celebrations, as a symbol of love and suffering.
