People from the South Pacific region gathered at Fulton Adventist College in Sabeto, Fiji for the “10,000 Toes” Health Summit held August 2-4, 2022.

This year’s health summit hosted several national and international health professionals who helped educate attendees on health issues, providing them with lifestyle strategies they can use to fight disease, said the organizers.

The program included a series of expert presenters from the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (GC), the South Pacific Division, the Trans-Pacific Union Mission, as well as Fiji and New Zealand. .

Throughout the presentations, participants learned about the alarming statistics of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) currently facing the South Pacific region, how lifestyle medicine can change a person’s life, and how spirituality of a person can affect their mental well-being.

According to GP Loata Musudole, “the South Pacific region has been declared the fattest region in the world,” and eating a plant-based diet can prevent, halt and reverse lifestyle-related diseases.

“It is clear that spirituality affects mental health and well-being, but the character and content of spiritual beliefs and practices can have a positive or negative effect on mental well-being,” said Zeno Charles-Marcel , Associate Director of CG Health Ministries.

Booths were set up for attendees to try hydrotherapy, charcoal therapy, massages and healthy juices, organizers said. The Fiji Cancer Society also had a stall and advised people on how to prevent and treat cancer.

Another highlight of the event was the presentation of recognition awards to the early ambassadors of the movement who helped lay the groundwork for the program. Taio Waga and Samu Komai have been promoted from Zone Ambassadors to National Senior Ambassadors. “I am happy that I have been given a great responsibility to serve the people,” said Samu Koroi, another national senior ambassador.

Throughout the summit, presenters encouraged attendees to follow the seven dimensions of health — being emotionally, physically, socially, professionally, intellectually, environmentally and spiritually in harmony — if one plans to live a life healthy and long.

By the end of the summit, more than 100 people had registered as ambassadors. “This meeting encouraged me to come out and share the health message,” said Ambassador Mere Lewarau.
