In the third stage, at the Mudec in Milan, of an international traveling exhibition, over 190 pieces tell the wealth, spirituality and natural environment of the civilizations of ancient Peru

On October 8, “Machu Picchu and the golden empires of Peru” opens at Mudec, an Italian stage open until February 19 of a traveling exhibition organized by the company World Heritage Exhibitions, which after having debuted at the Boca Raton Museum of Art ( Florida), made a stop in Paris.

With this initiative we wanted to give the opportunity to discover and rediscover the beauties of the civilizations of ancient Perusaid the two curators of the exhibition, Carole Fraresso, associate researcher of the Larco Museum in Lima, and Ulla Holmquist, director of the same museum. We have highlighted that their historical and cultural roots invite us to reflect on the problems of our contemporary societies: wealth and its ostentation, the relationship with the sacred and spirituality and the relationship of women and men with the natural environment.“.

The exhibition at Mudec also gives the opportunity to take a journey through time and space, allowing you to immerse yourself in the regions that characterized and still characterize Peru: the Costa, the Sierra, the Ceja de Selva, the three ecological and cultural sub-areas that have distinguished and qualified all the cultures of ancient Peru.

Visiting the exhibition, therefore, takes a journey that leads from the deserts of the Coast to the reliefs of the Amazon, passing through the valleys and plateaus of the Andes, accompanied by an exceptional guide, Ai Apaec, divinity of one of the most fascinating cultures of the Peruvian area: that of Moche.

This choice is not a stretch, because the god shared, in part, several aspects of the most important divinities of the other cultures of pre-Hispanic Peru. Through Ai Apaec the cultures (Chavín, Cupisnique, Moche, Nasca, Chancay, Lambayeque, Huari, Inca) that have characterized the Peruvian area for about three thousand years are presented in the exhibition.

At the same time, the rituals that guaranteed the equilibrium of the cosmos and the categories (duality, the high / low ratio, the link with ancestors and alter egos, etc.) that forged the way of thinking of women and men of the world presented in the exhibition.

The route winds through thematic rooms and through a particular “immersive room” which offers a flight simulation over the Inca city of Machu Picchu, famous throughout the world for its fascinating location. Altogether, over 190 pieces are brought together, almost entirely from the Larco Museum in Lima, which over time the president Andrés Álvarez Calderón Larco and the various directors have made one of the most beautiful in Peru.

There are many finds of great importance from an archaeological and artistic point of view and some of these are exhibited for the first time outside the country. They are objects in gold, silver and gilded copper, terracotta, sculptures, fabrics, necklaces, breastplates and various ornaments.

Even if the types of greatest appeal are those that present gold finds and those with erotic scenes, it is only right to invite archeology enthusiasts to linger on the terracotta bottle with the ceremony of the Sacrifice, which allowed us to understand beyond «the barrier of meaning »The most important ritual of the Moche culture, reconstructed in a satisfactory way only after the exceptional discoveries of Sipán.
