In Chile, the National Commission for Biblical Animation of Pastoral Care has prepared a proposal focused on active listening as a central element for the proclamation of the Word of God. This year has been marked by the National Discernment Process and the diocesan instances of the Synod on synodality.

Making these experiences its own, the Commission, in dialogue with those responsible for diocesan biblical animation of pastoral care and carrying out an exercise in synodality, has opted for the motto “Give us, Lord, a listening heart” (1 Kings 3,9), which invites, reads the Episcopal Conference website, to be at the service of the ecclesial community and society as a whole, starting from active listening, which is an invitation to understand the subjective experience of others and to be able to communicate with effectiveness of that understanding.

The activities of the initiative

To delve into what is proposed, three activities will be carried out from the National Commission which will be broadcast on the social networks of the Episcopal Conference of Chile and the website www.iglesia.cl, they will be:

On Friday 2nd September: – liturgical celebration: Beginning of the Month of the Word, from the Diocese of La Serena.

On Wednesday September 14: – pane foruml: Active listening in a synodal and discernment context. The following will participate: Pilar Ramírez, Director of the CECh’s Department of Prevention of Abuses; Mauricio Arellano, National Commission for Youth Ministry, representative of the South region (Valdivia); Celia Paludo, Director Center for Ignatian Spirituality; and Álvaro González, priest and psychologist.

Conversation: The Word of God in the synod and the national process of discernment. The following will participate: Alex Vigueras, Sacred Hearts priest, diocesan team for the Synod in Copiapó and Flor María Garrido, Carmelite nun of Charity of Vedruna, executive secretary of the Pastoral Vicariate of Melipilla

A website about the Month of the Word

In addition to the above, the website for the Month of the Word has been created, where you can find information on the activities carried out by the dioceses, and download biblical resources and materials for formation, prayer and biblical study.

For the second consecutive year, it has been proposed to change the name of the Month of the Bible, to use the Month of the Word, this to emphasize that the Word of God goes beyond just the book of the Bible, thus seeking that the Word “ listened to with devotion, guarded with accuracy and transmitted with fidelity by the church” (cf DV10), guide our ecclesial, personal and community discernment process, so that we can discover our vocation as a synodal people that pilgrims together with the Lord.
