Between spirituality and celebration, the concerts of the Toscana Gospel Festival return

All ready for the XXVI edition of Tuscany Gospel Festival that for over 20 years brings to our region the oldest form of American popular music with some of the best US choirs coming from Californiafrom the Florida and from Washington DC.

The Tuscany Gospel Festival tries to narrate the legendary story that sowed its seed as early as the 16th century, when free African men and women they found themselves stranded on a distant continent as slaves and started singing songs related to suffering and the rebirth of an entire people uprooted from their land with lyrics full of suffering and joy.

Andrea Laurenzi, artistic director of the festival, so he introduced the month of events dedicated to gospel: “To celebrate the 26th edition of the Toscana Gospel Festival we have decided to use a phrase by Jim Morrison who, with his life and music, represented one of the highest points of twentieth-century musical art. A declaration that we make our own in this difficult year for all of humanity, divided between suffering and war, and where Gospel music represents the desire for redemption, freedom and peace”.

I’m ten Tuscan cities who have chosen with courage and determination to give space to live music: Arezzo, Montepulciano, Torrita di Siena, San Giovanni Valdarno, Marciano della Chiana, Castelfranco Piandiscò, Cortona, Portoferraio, Agliana and Carrara.

There American Consul General Ragini Gupta he remembered the bond that binds Tuscany and the Toscana Gospel Festival at the African American history: “The Toscana Gospel Festival is the perfect premise for Martin Luther King Day on January 16 and African American History Month, the national celebration dedicated to reflecting on the achievements of the African American community and its immense contribution. Gospel music is part of this story, as it has its roots in “spirituals”, a type of religious folk song closely associated with the slavery of Africans in the American South. The songs served as a vehicle of communication, reflecting the struggles, hopes and triumphs of African Americans. Gospel music reveals an important part of the history and soul of America and the Toscana Gospel Festival helps to tell this story”.

The journey of Tuscany Gospel Festival, started in 1996, continues its path and puts music and its audience back at the center, a history of twenty-six years with over 310 choirs, 2970 artists and hundreds of concerts throughout Tuscany of talented gospel groups from the United States.
