The General Ángel Flores school, which is located in front of the square of the same name, was at the beginning of the 20th century a pantheon known as the “Pantheon of the Protestants”, the land was donated for the construction of a park at the beginning of the decade. of the 1920s by the German charity society of Mazatlan.

The place gained fame as the “Protestant Pantheon”, since a significant number of foreigners were buried there, in an area away from Catholics, but due to the urban growth of Mazatlan in those years, it was decided to create a new pantheon on that today we know as municipal pantheon number 1 Ángel Peralta.

After the pantheon ceased to exist, the land became a park, but due to the lack of schools in Mazatlan, the decision was made to divide the park and thus build the Gral. Ángel Flores Elementary School in 1943 (originally called Refugio Rolón). the same year the park now called Plazuela Ángel Flores, also known as Plazuela del Burro, was remodeled, but we will leave that story for another day.

A relic Sinaloa

The primary school is an architectural heritage of our state considered by UNESCO as a Sinaloan relic, why? It is the only official building that houses a panoramic clock in Mazatlán, this clock is of German manufacture and is located in the upper front part of the school.

Currently this clock does not work, but according to Mayor Luis Guillermo Benítez Torres, experts will be hired to repair it.

The curious thing about the school building is that it is shaped like an anchor. This is how the government of Pablo Macías Valenzuela wanted it to be, to honor General Ángel Flores when he was a stevedore on the docks and a Mazatlán sailor.

Who was General Ángel Flores?

General Ángel Camacho Flores was a Mexican soldier who participated in the Mexican Revolution and who served as Governor of Sinaloa from 1920 to 1924.

In 1910, when the Mexican Revolution broke out, he joined the movement with the Pomposo Acosta guerrilla. Although he formed his first troop with friends and acquaintances who supported him, by 1914 he headed the vanguard of Ramón F. Iturbide’s troops.

After his victory in Agua Prieta, he was named division general, military chief of the northwest division, and governor of the state of Sinaloa, which is why he moved to Mazatlán from 1920 to 1924. He died in 1926 in Culiacán, allegedly poisoned with arsenic. for being considered a threat to the government of Plutarco Elías Calles.

In order to pay homage to this Sinaloan, a union in the municipality of Navolato currently bears his name, the baseball stadium in Culiacán also bears his name, and various streets and schools in Sinaloa bear them.
