An international congress deepens in La Carolina (Jaén) in the figure of San Juan de la Cruz

The Jaén municipality of La Carolina hosts the International Congress ‘San Juan de la Cruz y su tiempo’, where experts will delve into the life and work of this figure from various points of view.

The Mayor Olavide Palace is the setting chosen for a meeting that will bring together national and international experts from universities in Spain, France, Portugal, Serbia and Slovakia or entities such as the Institute of Giennenses Studies (IEG).

Organized by the City Council of La Carolina, the IEG and the UJA with the sponsorship of the Caja Rural, it is organized around eight round tables that will analyze issues such as spirituality, women at the time of the saint, mysticism, portraits or the analysis of different poems, among others. It also includes a guided tour of places in the municipality linked to San Juan de la Cruz, such as the parish of the Immaculate, the hermitage of San Juan de la Cruz, well, orchard and fountain.

The mayor of La Carolina, Yolanda Reche, explained that this religious and literary figure “has a very important meaning for Carolinians” as their patron saint and as part of their history. “The seed of our municipality is the Convent of La Peñuela, a place where San Juan spent part of his life and, in fact, he spent a few weeks before he died. In addition, he asked or wanted to die in La Peñuela,” he said. he said.

The program will begin with the table chaired by Pierre Civil, from the Paris III-Sorbonne Nouvelle University. The superior of the Discalced Carmelites of Úbeda, Father Héctor Antonio Cáceres, will speak about ‘Saint John of the Cross from spirituality’, and Javier del Prado, from the Complutense of Madrid, with ‘Mysticism; problems of terminology and referentiality: the case of San Juan de la Cruz’.

At the second table, with Olivier Millet (Sorbonne-Paris IV) as president, Pierre Civil will offer the paper ‘The first portraits of Saint John of the Cross and their diffusion’ and Bernadette Rey Mimoso-Ruiz (Institut Catholique de Toulouse), ‘ De l’ombre naît la Lumière: The Dark Night by Carlos Saura (1989), a lecture by Saint Jean de la Croix.

It will be followed by a conference chaired by Florence Dumora (Le Mans University), with José María Fernández, from the University of Oviedo, and the conference ‘Reading Mysticism in France’; Camille Signes (Lumière Lyon 2 University), with ‘From Jean de la Croix to Jean-Joseph Surin : l’itinéraire chanté de l’âme’, and Dominique Millet-Gérard (Sorbonne-Paris IV), with the entitled ‘Saint Jean de la Croix lu par Hans Urs von Balthasar’.

In the afternoon, there will be two tables. The one chaired by the president of the IEG, Adela Tarifa, will feature Enrique Gómez (IEG and the Royal Academy of History), who will speak about ‘The Carmelites of Andújar, 16th to 19th centuries’, and Amelina Correa, from Granada University), on ‘A thousand thanks pouring out… Saint John of the Cross and his influence on some spiritual daughters (Granada-Jaén, 16th-20th centuries)’.

Elena Llamas, from the University of Salamanca & Iemyrhd, will chair the last table of the day. In it, Adela Tarifa will analyze ‘Woman and marginalization at the time of Saint John of the Cross’ and Àngels Santa, from the University of Lleida) will speak on ‘Thérèse de Lisieux and Saint John of the Cross’.

SECOND MATCH

Already on Thursday Àngels Santa will chair the round table with Marie-France Borot (University of Barcelona) and the talk ‘Juan de la Cruz ou la passion de l’invisible’; Florence Dumora (Le Mans University) and the one entitled ‘Between nothing and everything, the visionary poetics of Juan de la Cruz’ and Elena Llamas and her paper ‘Traces of the language of San Juan in contemporary poetry’.

In the next one, chaired by José María Fernández (University of Oviedo) Francisco José Pérez-Schmid (UJA and official chronicler of Navas de Tolosa, Santa Elena, Aldeaquemada and Montizon) will analyze ‘The devotion to Saint John of the Cross in the settlers of La Carolina and the New Populations of Sierra Morena: an inherited religiosity’.

For his part, Pedro Ramos, from the IEG and official chronicler of La Carolina, and Juan Manuel Patón, graduate in Fine Arts and archivist secretary of the Brotherhood of San Juan de la Cruz Carolina, will address ‘La Peñuela: a village, a convent and a real population under the protection of San Juan de la Cruz’.

The last round table will be chaired by Encarnación Medina (UJA). Paula Almeida (Citcem-U. do Porto) will talk about ‘Mirrors of Saint John of the Cross in Portugal (17th-18th centuries): texts and practices’; while Vesna Elez (University of Belgrade) will do it on ‘Le spleen de Baudelaire et la noche noche de Saint Jean de la Croix’. In addition, Jana Juhásová, from the Catholic University of Ruzomberok (Slovakia) and Adriana Lasticová (Complutense) will offer the conference ‘Slovak poets pay homage to Saint John of the Cross’.
