We have all at least once watched a movie in which a person is bewitched using a doll that is pricked with needles.
Does this kind of cliché relayed by the film industry sum up the practice of voodoo? The BBC contacted Professor Dodji Amouzouvi, professor of sociology at Abomey-Calavi University in Benin to find out more about the cult.
What is voodoo?
Voodoo is a deity of the order of the transcendent, a mystery.
He is a god. This is the modality that African blacks have found to find an answer to the existential questions of man: who are we, where are we going? What are we allowed to hope for?
It is this modality, set up that serves as an intermediary between a unique, omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent god and us men on earth.
Voodoo is not a doll with holes in which we put thorns like in Hollywood. Voodoo is not positivity, it is not negativity, voodoo is god.
Voodoo, as this deity, is not a (traditional) religion, not a culture, not a system of thought, not a cult. In contrast, voodoo generated a culture, generated a religion. It is a mistake to confuse voodoo with a religion. There is a religion generated by voodoo, a cult that we devote to the entities that make up the world of voodoo.
Is there a link between voodoo and witchcraft?
Voodoo has absolutely nothing to do with witchcraft. There is some literature that has portrayed voodoo like this. Voodoo was initially revealed by Christian missionaries, they found on their arrival in Africa, a pure, deep belief that was not theirs.
For a long time, European ethnocentrism wiped the slate clean. French colonization came to complicate things. It is said that black cannot have a culture, a belief, a religion, not a history and not a soul. That was to serve their cause.
In the confrontation between the West and Africa, the victory was Western. They managed to make us hate ourselves, to make us forget our religions, our beliefs which have been satanized, demonized.
We were made to believe that it is bad because the proponents of this project know the importance, they know the value. They know our postage goes through there. And if we’re free, it doesn’t suit them, it doesn’t do them any good. And then the chicote, the rifle and the atrocities of all kinds accompanied…the Christ who is presented as the ideal, the beautiful, the true and voodoo is presented as witchcraft, the negative.
If we have come to the truth that no culture is superior to another, that cultures are different from each other, then why can these deities from these cultures be superior to those of others? It is not possible, we must coexist.
The practice of voodoo in America is explained by the slave trade which deported our ancestors to this continent.
In America, voodoo has kept its essence, its base, but it has taken on local color. Sometimes they even managed to do things that we couldn’t find. For example, they were able to make a real synthesis between voodooism and Christianity by also finding their saints.
I explain this part by the lucidity, the universal character of voodoo.
What are the deities of the voodoo cult?
There are several entities in the Voodoo world. Each of these deities represents a vital energy and constitutes this bundle of identities to go back to the unique god who is different from the god of Christians and Muslims.
Each of these voodoo constellation deities represents an energy that can be activated or deactivated for the purposes of the cause.
There are so many that asking for their attributes would be futile. Each of these voodoo has a specific attribute because of its specific energy which relates for example to earth, water or many other elements.
Today, voodoo exists and has devotees, supporters or consumers all over the world. Voodoo is a universal religion. The acceptance of voodoo or the recourse to voodoo in a permanent or occasional way, we find it everywhere even if it started from the black African world, more particularly from Benin, from the Gulf of Nigeria.
Voodoo is important for people who accept it and perceive it as such. It is voodoo that he receives existence, promotion, security, etc. It is voodoo that guides and gives meaning to our lives.
