We come from the Earth: cultures in contact

Grupo Documenta screening cycle

The colective Documenta Group proposes a monthly cycle of exhibition and debate based on 11 self-produced films related to the theme of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas. Each meeting will be held virtually with referents, protagonists and the production team, offering a public discussion on relevant issues in the national context.

The proposed activity is free, with prior registration.

The Cycle of projections “We Come from Earth: Cultures in Contact” It is a space for the exhibition of audiovisual works, for the articulation of relevant public debates on the local agenda. In the manner of the well-known Cine-Club, but devoted to the dissemination and promotion of films for their theme linked to the presence of Indigenous Peoples, beyond their careful selection for formal values and for their cinematographic quality.

In these years marked by the identity crisis in the face of economic globalization, knowing our past and present is redefined and the need arises to understand the current circumstances that the Original Cultures of America are going through.

Portraying and disseminating this situation through the films that we have made on this subject is essential, not only to arouse national and international interest in the situation of primitive peoples, but also to publicize the wisdom, traditions, values unrepeatable and their contribution to the solution of the problems facing all of humanity.

We believe that a better understanding of these societies and the way in which they interacted and interact with the various social and cultural components over time, will contribute to eliminating the marginalization and lack of protection to which they are subjected. Also favoring the historical and cultural awareness of indigenous and non-indigenous peoples.

In each of the proposed films, the practices, knowledge and beliefs of each people are shown. In this way, a journey through different geographies is carried out, to show towns that maintain a relationship with their environment without altering or little altered by European culture. They also go from rural towns that do not preserve an ethnic identity to groups made up of representatives of the peoples in the diaspora, in which their knowledge and beliefs subsist, but who live in a megalopolis like Buenos Aires.

The cycle

Expected to last 6 months, the cycle began in May with the screening of “Chronicles of the Great Serpent”, and will continue with the schedule that follows later.

Links to view the films will be provided in the week prior to the date of the film-debate meeting and, on the third Friday of each month, the virtual meeting will be held with the protagonists of the films, the production team, references in the thematic field, teachers and specialists. Each one will be able to present briefly on the subject, and will be open to questions from the public.

Those registered will receive in their email the link to see the movie of the month and the link to participate in the meeting via ZOOM. Certificates of attendance will be delivered.

The ceremony

The rites of passage, as well as the trips, mark the passage from one stage to another, living the experience of symbolic death and rebirth. Among the Yshir, an indigenous people
of the Paraguayan Chaco, the rite of initiation of children into the adult world, is carried out for 3 months in the mountains, away from families. There they learn the Culture: Ethical, moral and natural values. They grow in the sacred experience of the unity between the individual and the group. Back in the community they are already men.

In recent years, the pressure exerted by Western Culture has reduced the living space and ancestral activities of the Yshir, causing many families to travel: they migrate to the cities, experiencing a process that dramatically transforms the Sacred unit.

Produced by Grupo Documenta (Argentina) and Union of Indigenous Communities of the Yshir Nation (UCINY- Paraguay). With the support of the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (Argentina), International Development Research Center (Canada) – Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (Canada), Cultures in Contact (Argentina).

2015 / Duration 82 minutes / Argentina-Paraguay-Canada
