Theater: “The Last Judgment” between chills, fears and questions

The play begins with the presence of two men dressed in white who perform dance movements while throwing pieces of paper to the public on which appear small words intended to boost the assembly. Then a background sound that is not very pleasing to the ears like those used in horror films intensifies this feeling of insecurity and fear.

Independent man, Last chance, Double life, Faithful heart, characters from various backgrounds suddenly find themselves before the throne of judgment and try to justify themselves by highlighting their good works. The first, arrogant and sure of himself, relies on the good deeds he has done, believing that these would be enough for him to enter the kingdom of heaven. Mistake ! Independent man had neglected the good part, that of receiving Christ in his life and he is sent without regard to hell. Last chance is a lucky one, one could say, because a few hours before his judgment, he listens for the first time to the voice of the Lord and accepts it without expressing any doubt and deserves the kingdom of heaven.

The third scenario, probably the most educational, embodies a young woman, exemplary in church, and leading a life of debauchery outside to conform to the world, unfortunately forgetting that there is no compromise with the word. of God and that one cannot serve two masters at the same time. Her fate will therefore be hell even if she has contributed to saving souls through her ministry. The fourth case evokes the image of a self-effacing woman, having no title to the church but leading a life of piety. He will be rewarded for his righteousness and authenticity to the word of God.

This is the plot of this performance which, via monologues, takes us to a court where each condemned person receives his sentence. At the end of the performance, we are a little shaken by all these revelations as declared by a faithful almost in tears. ” It’s a performance that speaks more than a sermon “. ” In any case it made me think, I still have several steps to take, but I really hope not to be surprised at the last hour, God forbid. said another visibly upset worshiper.

A piece that sounds like a death knell because it awakens awareness and questions arise in our hearts. Where are we in our walk with Christ? What must we do to live in accordance with the word of God? Where will our place be after our time on earth? Questions that lead to self-retrospection and above all to a change of life.

Finally, with a sober staging, accompanied by a few instrumentals, Victorine Mambou, director, knew how to embody the atmosphere of terror, agitation and lack of peace during this judgment. Indeed, between silence, sound noises and music creating an atmosphere of fear and concern, the public finds itself at a crossroads, at a crossroads where it is urgent to position themselves for salvation. This play was presented for the first time at the Evangelical Missionary Baptist Church of Kinsoudi, in Brazzaville. The director intends to benefit other communities.
