The International Documentary Meetings of Montreal (RIDM) announce the opening and closing films of their 25e editing !

REWIND & PLAY by Alain Gomis and WOCHIIGII LO: END OF THE PEACE by Heather Hatch

The International Documentary Meetings of Montreal (RIDM) are proud to announce the opening and closing films of their 25e editing which will be held from November 17 to 27, 2022. With the intention of creating a dialogue between eras and encouraging reflection on our relationship to archives and the writing of history, the programming team has chosen Rewind & Play from the French director Alain Gomis to open this anniversary edition.

If in the first film the present clarifies the past, it is quite the opposite that occurs in the feature film selected at the end, Wochiigii lo: End of the Peace by haida filmmaker Heather Hatch. Contemporary industrial projects are destroying the ancestral lands of several indigenous nations, which are supposed to be protected, and are casting a worrying shadow over the future of their communities. A deplorable situation that resonates in many communities around the world.

Opening Movie – REWIND & PLAY

In 1969, jazz musician Thelonious Monk took part in the French television show Jazz Portrait. Constructed largely from unused archives of this recording, Rewind & Play is a harrowing work that exposes media failings as well as the fabrication of a colonial discourse in post-production. Leaving a judicious place for the studio interpretation of a few musical pieces, Alain Gomis (France, Congratulations) also manages to showcase the immense talent of this complex artist. A true demonstration of the power of editing, the film thus exposes the white male gaze (white male gauze) of a hegemonic cultural critique embodied by an arrogant interviewer who now no longer manages to lock Monk into a pre-established stereotyped narrative devoid of political charge.

Rewind & Play will be screened in Quebec premiere on Thursday, November 17 at 7 p.m. at the Imperial Cinema (by invitation only), in collaboration with the Consulate General of France in Quebec.

A second screening of the film, open to the public, will take place on Saturday, November 19 at 8 p.m. at Cineplex Odéon Quartier Latin. Rewind & Play is produced by Sphere Films and Andolfi.

Closing movie – WOCHIIGII LO: END OF THE PEACE

In 2014, BC Hydro announced the construction of a third dam on the Peace River, located in the heart of the territory of many Indigenous nations that signed Treaty 8, dating from 1899. This titanic new construction will flood tens of kilometers of the valley of the Peace River. Communities know the damage caused to their ancestral territories and to the environment by existing dams. So they don’t want it. By showing the way of life, the rituals and the spirituality of the communities engaged in a fierce struggle, Wochiigii lo: End of the Peace in fact understand all the importance. Above all, it expands the subject by seriously questioning the value of treaties, since governments do not respect them, despite their commitments to the rights of Indigenous nations and the discourse of reconciliation.

Wochiigii lo: End of the Peace will be screened as a Quebec premiere, at the end of the festival on Saturday, November 26 at 7 p.m. at the Imperial Cinemain the presence of the director Heather Hatch. A second screening of the film will take place on Sunday, November 27 at 6 p.m. at the Cinémathèque québécoise.

Wochiigii lo: End of the Peace is produced and distributed by Della & Goliath Productions.

The complete program of the 25e edition of the RIDM will be unveiled on Wednesday, October 26, 2022.
