“The Paths of the Sacred Mount of Viggiano”. Yes to candidacy on the Unesco World Heritage List


Yes unanimously to the resolution that bears the signature of the presidents of the regional council and council of Basilicata, Vito Bardi and Carmine Cicala and which has the purpose of supporting the candidacy of “The Walk to the Sacred Mount of Viggiano” upon registration in Unesco World Heritage List.

With the resolution, illustrated in the Chamber by the President of the Assembly Carmine Cicala, and signed by the Italia Viva group, the Regional Council commits the Regional Council to support the proposal, making use of the regional structure and all the technical-scientific skills within it, with the aim of implementing any useful initiative aimed at raising awareness on the subject of the President of the Council of Ministers, the Minister of Culture, the Archaeological Superintendence of Fine Arts and Landscape of Basilicata, the Presidents of the Provinces of Potenza and Matera, the Municipalities of Basilicata and neighboring regions, the Dioceses of Basilicata and neighboring regions and the regional school system at all levels; to be of assistance to the municipal administration of Viggiano for the preparation of the documents necessary to stipulate an institutional memorandum of understanding between all the bodies and territories involved in order to support the candidacy at every stage; collaborate with the municipal administration of Viggiano in order to promote actions, projects, programs and strategies thesis on the successful outcome of the candidacy, through the enhancement of the historical, religious, cultural, social and ethno-anthropological aspects; take part, through a representative, in the Technical Committee set up to carry out the preparatory work for the inscription in the Unesco World Heritage List of “The Paths to the Sacred Mount of Viggiano”.

In the premise of the document it is recalled that “the Lucanian people have always recognized the cult of the Madonna del Sacro Monte di Viggiano an icon of its own history, representative of the difficulties and hopes, fatigue and his desire for redemption and in the pilgrimage to the Sanctuary an authentic metaphor of life. The Paths to the Sacro Monte di Viggiano constitute a cultural and natural heritage representative of the identity and spirituality of the Lucanian people and of a large slice of southern peoples to be made known and recognized as an interesting example of diversity and human creativity, absolutely compatible with the existing instruments in the field of human rights and with the needs of civil coexistence between communities, groups and individuals, as well as example of sharing behaviors that respect the artificial balance between man and nature“.

The municipal administration of Viggiano in deciding to protect, promote and enhance the traditions and worship of the Madonna del Sacro Monte di Viggiano and its pilgrimage itineraries, nominating “The Paths to the Sacro Monte di Viggiano” as World Heritage Site right build a community path that starts from the bottom involving the institutional bodies present in the area (Region, Provinces, Municipalities, Schools, Diocese), cultural associations and local stakeholders, to favor the establishment of a promoting committee for the candidacy.

It is highlighted that “the regionpursuant to articles 2 and 9 of the Statute, protects and enhances the identities, vocations and characteristics of the territory, with the participation of the Municipalities and large-area entities, which participate in the promotion of the territory in its historical components, cultural heritage and regional identity, recognizes culture as a fundamental element to strengthen the civil and political ties of the regional community, as well as a resource for growth, contributes to ensuring the conservation of cultural and intangible assets, enhances and protects the historical, artistic and cultural heritage of Basilicata“.
