It is not a small thing.

Gunn confirmed a few months ago that this would be the last Guardians of the Galaxy movie with their current lineupwhich has generated great expectations and many theories about how their goodbye will be on the big screen. But it’s not perfect, of course not. I’ll start with what I didn’t like about this Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and that’s how I get rid of it.

The plot is completely anecdotal. Beyond the satisfaction of knowing the origin of Rocket, undoubtedly one of the most beloved members of the team, the story only serves to jump from one action scene to another. Hand in hand comes the villain, the High Evolutionarya histrionic Chukwudi Iwuji who wears the role of a bad guy from an operetta (cosmic) with the Skeletor from the cartoons of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe as referent. Comic book fans will be sore to see this iconic comic book character so blurred.

But not one thousandth of what James Gunn’s version of Warlock is going to hurt. A key character of the cosmic division of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with tremendous importance and that over the years has accumulated layers in his complex personality. unfortunately here it does not stop being a filling in the plane. It has its explanation, as a long-term play I want to think, but of course in the movie end up bordering on ridiculous.

Having said that, and taking into account that we have been fighting with Gunn for some time in our director-spectator relationship, I recognize his good work with this third installment of Guardians. Because the movie is tremendously funny, spectacular and tender. Two and a half hours of footage that they pass in a breath. Because the Guardians of the Galaxy in this film have come to save the galaxy and incidentally, to make the hearts of the spectators and the “Marvelites” happy in equal parts.

If you have to fight, you fight; if you have to cry, you cry

After the feeling of catastrophe that left me Thor: Love and ThunderI imagined that the humor and adventure formula was already exhausted for Marveland that what he offered us Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania they were no more than the last dregs of the fuel tank. I was wrong, it happens to me a lot, nothing happens. James Gunn has such a good grasp on these characters, that with both feet already in the DC Universe he has done an excellent job so that they the motor of the film are its protagonists. The truth is, I cared very little about what happened with the High Evolutionary and his evil plans because the Guardians have had me in my pocket the whole movie.

In this sense, the main cast is so in sync with their roles that it doesn’t seem like they’ve passed four years since we last saw them. As with other great icons of the House of Ideas, such as Tony Stark or Steve Rogers, these characters belong now and forever to these actors. As a footnote, it was about time Gunn put us on screen at Nathan Fillion in a Guardians movie, because the fans had been waiting for it for almost 10 years, and the truth is, it’s been great to see you.

Hand in hand with these characters we immerse ourselves in an adventure in search of the origins of Rocket, but in reality, It’s a coming of age journey. He has grown older and learned to leave some things behind. And it is that among the many topics that this film intelligently touches on, from ecology to the most intimate spirituality, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is about getting older. Do you know that day that was the last day that all your friends from the neighborhood went down to play together in the park? Or those reeds with the university classmates who were the last reeds with all the university classmates? Well, that’s what this film is about, that day, without realizing it, arrives. And from him, life goes on. Even if it’s a completely different life.

And come to this moment, if you have to cry, you cry. It’s okay, because you already knew what you were coming for, which was to say goodbye to the Guardians of the Galaxy. Or at least, of these Guardians of the Galaxy, because I imagine that as long as there is a galaxy, there must be guardians to take care of it and to entertain us. Marvel knows you’re going to cry, Gunn knows you’re going to cry, you know you’re going to cry, and the Skrulls know you’re going to cry. And if you don’t cry, I think you’re a little broken inside.

Like life itself, not everything is plain, because this elegant farewell to the Guardians is part of a space salad seasoned with some of the best action scenes in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I do not exaggerate, for me the “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” of the Beastie Boys has changed forever: now I will not listen to this great song again without thinking about the Guardians of the Galaxy. At this point it makes little sense for me to describe Marvel’s ability to leave the viewer speechless, but I was extremely happy to once again witness one of those endless slowed-down sequences that seem to come to life from the pages of Marvel comics. . Which is, ultimately, what it is.

The future of Guardians of the Galaxy

Well, now what? Well, now it’s time to wait, because Marvel Studios makes long-term plans and has already set us an appointment for 2026 with Avengers: Secret Warsin one of those cinematographic events that are cooking on movie screens little by little for almost a decade.
