According to one of the authors and study doctor, Tracy Balboni, “Our findings indicate that attention to spirituality in critical illness and in health should be a vital part of future person-centered care, and the results should stimulate further discussion and progress on how spirituality can be incorporated into this kind of care.”

People with higher spirit, healthier people

During the study, a multitude of evidence about the quality of spirituality in serious illness and health was analyzed between January 2000 and April 2022. Of all the articles, the authors noted that, For healthy people, spiritual involvement in the community is associated with healthier living, greater longevity, less depression, and less substance use.

In fact, for many patients, this aspect of life influences disease outcomes, quality of life, and medical care. In addition, the spiritual aspect helps raise awareness among doctors and professionals.
