As a prelude to the upcoming release of her first EP, Niki Black confided in aficia about the start of a promising career.

Last October, Niki Black lifted the veil on “My Little Dreamer”, a dreamlike and ethereal first single cradled by the softness of the piano and a harp. The one who had given voice in the tenth season of the tele-hook ‘The Voice’, in 2021, is then revealed through an extremely polished artistic universe. In order to continue the presentations, the artist will unveil his first EP The Dream Session on December 9. For aficia, the artist gave some details on this upcoming project!

Niki Black, the interview!

1 Could you introduce yourself for the French public who don’t know you yet?
My name is Niki Black, I’m from Los Angeles but I currently live and work in Paris. I am a songwriter and performer, I play the piano and I like to sublimate emotions and sensations through the songs I sing. It is in any case my current state of mind, that of being able to convey emotions.

2 The general public discovered you in The Voice, what memories do you have of this experience?
I was lucky enough to be able to participate in this show last year. For me, this is a crucial step that has opened many doors for me in the development of my career. This show is an incredible showcase for talent and it is undoubtedly the best way to gain visibility and have a connection with the French public. But not only with the French public since ‘The Voice’ is followed in many countries, I am thinking in particular of French-speaking people in Switzerland or Belgium. Following ‘The Voice’, I had the chance to sign on a label in Paris and work here. I feel very lucky to see my dream come true. It’s crazy to think that the public is finally discovering me through my universe and my songs. And it is undoubtedly thanks to ‘The Voice’.

3 You unveiled your first single titled “My Little Dreamer”. Can you come back to the genesis of this song?
The genesis of this song refers to spirituality and purity. I was then in Los Angeles, in full confinement, in a difficult moment for everyone. I had to leave Paris and leave everything I was doing behind me. I had also fallen in love with a man who inspired all the songs on my first EP The Dream Session. And it is this beautiful relationship that has instilled the dreamy side of “My Little Dreamer”. I don’t really remember how but the piano melody came to me immediately when I started working on this song. I associate this romantic relationship with the idea of living a waking dream.

I was also inspired by astrology. I love astrology! I explored the message of dreams because the person I wrote the song about is Pisces. This sign is connected to the planet Neptune which immerses it in the stars and dreams. There is also behind this combination the symbol of Jesus Christ, a strong symbolism that refers to spirituality.

4 Was it important for you to bet on a ballad and sounds that go against the current of what we can usually hear on the radio?
Yes, because it really refers to my state of mind when designing the song. The world was under confinement, I was alone, in intimacy with my piano. And that’s why this song is so emotional. This ballad testifies both to a moment in my life and to the situation of confinement experienced in the world because of the health crisis.

5 What are your next projects?
“My Little Dreamer” is a song taken from an EP composed of 4 titles. The EP, The Dream Session, will be released on all digital platforms on December 9th. This project was designed as a special auditory experience that could end up being a dream. When you listen to the 4 tracks, you have the feeling of continuous listening. The mantra of this EP resides in the idea that love is a dream. The music is inspired by my own life experiences. I would say that the atmosphere that emanates from the songs is emotional, vulnerable and mythical.

I would also like to have the chance to collaborate with French artists! I dream of doing a duet with a rockstar. I’m a fan of Johnny Hallyday and so I’m looking for the next Johnny Hallyday. I love collaborating with people. And on the EP, I had the chance to collaborate with remarkable people. Let’s wait and see what happens in the future!
