Let’s go for four weeks of concerts: RhinoJazz more eclectic than ever, on the launch pad

RhinoJazz launches its 44th edition on Tuesday October 4 with…”The Firebird” by Stravinsky at the Saint-Etienne Opera. On the program, until October 23, 27 days of music in no less than 28 municipalities of the Loire and the Rhône, i.e. 42 concerts and 2 creations, bringing together a total of 290 musicians; but also conferences, screenings at the Saint-Etienne cinematheque, a photo exhibition at the Ceysson gallery in Saint-Etienne as well…

Unquestionably and more than ever, the Rhino Jazz with its 42 concerts will take place this year under the sign of the most wild eclecticism, the blue notes remaining at the center of a musical game that promises to be exciting.

Just mention a few of the many artists on the program: Lionel Martin, Celia Kameni Raphaël Imbert, or even Kaz Hawkins, or even Otis Taylor, Ablaye Cissoko, the Belmondo brothers, Minor sing and many others, etc.

Celia Kameni

The Rhino Jazz kicks off on Tuesday October 4 with Stravinsky’s Firebird, given at the Saint-Etienne Opera.

This concert was born from a meeting between the conductor Daniel Kawka and the hyperactive saxophonist from Lyon, Lionel Martin, always up for musical adventures as long as they are creative and charged with emotion.

In the Lyon metropolis, we will also be entitled, at the Radiant-Bellevue in Caluire, to dive into the film “Ascenseur pour l’échafaud” via a musical reinterpretation of the music of Miles Davis by the Belmondo brothers.

Raphael Imbert

Always quick to move us with original compositions suffused with spirituality (we remember his deeply touching Bach-Coltrane given last year), the Marseilles composer and saxophonist Raphaël Imbert will be on October 14 at the Opéra Undeground (ex-mourned AmphiJazz) for a return to his roots which promises to be exciting with his ”Coltranien” quartet Oraison where he will find pianist Vincent Lafont, double bassist Pierre Fenichel and drummer Mourad Benhammou.

As we can see, this year there will be many concerts in the Lyon metropolis for this Festival of Loire essence, since its headquarters are based in Saint-Chamond in the Gier valley.

A welcome Festival between Rhône-et-Saône because it comes at a time when we feel a little orphaned by Jazz, at least when it comes to new musicians, emerging or firmly established in the jazz sphere.

What alchemy then, this Festival? Ludovic Chazalon, the artistic director of the Festival explains that he has set up a program for this Festival “where jazz music mirrors blues, soul and sometimes gospel.”

One of the peculiarities of the Rhino which, among other things, has made it possible to discover in the past some pearls like Youn Sun Nah, then totally unknown, is to make discover both emerging artists who will rub shoulders with sure values like Shai Maestro, for example, on October 19 in Oullins.

Similarly, Otis Taylor, particularly rare in France, will be present at the unmissable Nuit du blues on October 15 in Saint-Chamond, one of the signature dishes of this musical feast.

We will also be able to hear other great voices of blues and soul like Kaz Hawkins for example on October 14 in Saint-Chamond.

-44th Rhino Jazz festival, in 28 municipalities of Loire Sud and Rhône, for 42 concerts, from October 1 to 23, 2022.
