Ciao Mark! Come stai? Come procedono le cose ultimamente?

Ciao, grazie mille a voi.

Iniziamo a parlare del vostro nuovo disco, chiamato “Spirits”, a 5 anni da “The Stories We Tell Ourselves”. Innanzitutto complimenti!

Chi cerca trova.

Tanto amore a tutti! Ciao!

—ENGLISH VERSION—

Hi guys! Welcome to SpazioRock.it, it’s a pleasure to have you. How are you? How have you been doing lately?

Ciao! Hey, thanks so much for having us. We’re doing great and wrapping up the final days of our tour with In This Moment and Sleep Token here in the US. We’re honestly excited to get in some home time with family.

Let’s start talking about your new record, called “Spirits”, 5 years since “The Stories We Tell Ourselves”. First of all, kudos to you! How is it the feeling now that it is finally released?

It’s feeling excellent to have it out for all the world to hear and experience. There’s so much that went into this record so it feels relieving to have it finished and see everyone take it in!

Musically speaking, in which aspects has the composition process been similar and different from your past experience? And talking about specific tracks, for example “Don’t Look Back” has captured my attention because of its predominant use of electronics: how was it conceived?

So much of this record was done while we had been separated due to the pandemic. Ben, Dan and myself got together at the end of 2019 to start hashing out ideas in the jam room. Then we all got together early in 2020 before the pandemic and only once again at the end of the year to do some drum tracking at Sonic Ranch Studios in El Paso, TX. We weren’t all physically together again until about 6 months ago. It was a very different process. Because of all this it just took a lot longer to try and feel the ‘magic’ you feel when you’re all in the same room together. It was very different lyric writing together over Zoom, but we figured it out and just had to push through it. The song “Don’t Look Back” was a song that started as an idea from Jonny. He had just programmed some cool stuff and we got to work on it immediately. A lot of the stuff he had originally ended up staying and making it into the final recording you hear now.

The topics explored on this album especially document the last years hunted by the spirits of desperation and isolation of lockdown, technology and substance abuse, broken relationships. If you could exorcise one of these first, what would you choose?

All of these can be destructive and extremely stressful and frustrating to deal with. However, I honestly don’t think I would get rid of any of them. It’s through that horrendous process that we created this record and it’s through the darkness that you find the light. Some of the most precious stones have to go through rough treatment to earn their luster.

Your songs “TIRED OF WINNING / SHIPS IN THE NIGHT” appear in the soundtrack of “The Retaliators”, a horror-thriller film by Better Noise. How was it to be a part of a project like this that involves other important artists/bands (the HU, Bad Wolves, Mötley Crüe…), and to write a song with that purpose?

It was great to be a part of the film and have our song used for it.

You launched the “Spirits Test”, which combines what you’ve learned from similar personality tests including Myers-Briggs, The Big 5, Carl Jung and the Zodiac. It measures the psychometry of your dominant perceptions to determine your “type of spirit”. How did you actually transform your knowledge on this field into creation of something related?

So Jonny actually had been working on this since 2018. I remember him approaching us with this interesting chart and explaining what he was interested in doing with it. We all thought it was neat and cool, but we din’t know how it could fit into the band. So he continued developing it and partnered with the artist Micah Ulrich to try and bring his concept into the Nothing More world more. As soon as they started sharing these characters it all started to come to life and make a lot more sense. We married these characters with the existing symbols we had and have further broadened the entire Nothing More experience. All our existing symbols now have so much more depth and meaning behind each of them. It really is like the next movie in a series.

Continuing on this path, recorded messages of thoughts by Alan Watts are present in some of your songs. You have always been inspired by his philosophy and it transpires through lyrics, but how much do you think it has affected your everyday life and the way you see things and act?

We all subscribe to a lot of what Alan taught in his lectures. He’s honestly one of many philosophers and spiritual teachers we enjoy learning from that have an obvious outward affect on how we see and experience the world. You can’t take back epiphanies; once the bell has been rung you can’t unring it. So this is to say everything we’ve grown from while seeking these teachings has greatly affected our everyday life and how we interact with the world.

Your first graphic novel is available on the market, too. What’s the story you want to tell through this work?

Yes! We’re so very excited to once again further expand the Nothing More world. Creating this graphic novel was an opportunity to reach people that might not know of Nothing More as well as allow those super fans to take an even deeper dive down the rabbit hole into the meaning behind these symbols and Spirits. As any Nothing More fan knows, we enjoy great meaningful hearkelt stories. So I really got to enjoy this passion project in novel form and not just in song lyric form. It was nice to able to be a little more long winded and really take some more time with character development all the while referencing lyrics and themes from our entire discography.

You started making music almost twenty years ago, and through record labels and line-up changes you’ve been reaching stability for a few years. What would you like to say to fresh new professional musicians who may have some legit fears about not “making it”?

One thing we always tell those seeking advice for ‘how to make it’ is to first of all keep that attitude. If you seek you will find. You will learn how to work smart and not just hard. You will experience victories and failures and everything in between, but don’t give up. There’s an interesting cosmic rule that is strangely accurate… it takes 10 years or 10K hours to be an expert at anything. So keep at it… another great tip we’ve learned is to be open to constructive criticism and realize that all of your old ideas/thoughts/creations will still be there if these new ones don’t work. Don’t be defensive. Find a mentor who’s not afraid to tell you that you suck or that an idea you have is not good at all… it hurts to hear that, but it’s important to find someone you trust and respect and is solution oriented.

Talking about live shows, you’re in the middle of an American tour now. Do you have in mind to do some concert dates to promote your new release, maybe in Europe too?

We are currently planning a headline Spirits tour for 2023. We’re very excited about what we’re going to accomplish live. Unfortunately, there’s nothing set in stone for EU, but we really hope to be over their for summer festivals and get back into sweaty rock clubs with all of our EU fans. We miss you dearly and we really hope we get to do a more in depth Italian tour too! Italy has always been a culture that has fascinated us and brought us great joy. Plus, my last name is Vollelunga and I have a lot of Italian in my blood!

We’re getting to the end of the interview. Would you like to leave a final message to your fans and our readers?

Thank you for being patient with us. We know it took us awhile to finish Spirits and we know the world is still pumng itself back together. We can’t wait to rock stages with you again and we hope it is far sooner than later. Much love to everyone! Ciao!
