From “Final Fantasy” to “Zelda”, via … “Goldorak”: the video games we are most looking forward to in 2023

“Final Fantasy XVI”, the return of the king?

We are afraid when we talk about FFXVI (for those close to us). Fear of disappointment, fear of expecting too much, fear of failure… But the more the images of the game flow, the more we want to believe it. Everything looks epic, dramatic, dantesque, like these characters tossed about by war who confront and literally summon their gigantic inner demons. Frankly, any role-playing fan can only salivate seeing what this future opus of one of the most emblematic series of the genre looks like.

“Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom”, the return of the king’s daughter?

The Zelda series had undergone a spectacular transformation with the previous episode, “Breath of the Wild”, which had the luxury of revolutionizing not only its own formula but also the very concept of open-world video games. Six years later (it doesn’t make us any younger), a direct sequel is coming. The game looks just as great as the previous oneit remains to be seen whether he will have enough qualities to compensate for the absence, this time, of a surprise effect.

“Street Fighter 6”, the potential big slap

The suspense is less here: many of us have already tested the game with the controller in hand, and it’s overall a pure delight. “Street Fighter 6” seems capable of convincing both those who have never left the series and those who have only good memories of their games on the cult second episode in the 90s. It’s beautiful, fluid, punchy, and we already guess an overflowing content. HADOUKEN!

“Diablo IV”, a redemption to be completed

Another highly anticipated return is that of the series of role-playing and action games “Diablo”. More than ten years after the previous opus, the competition is fierce in its genre but the king wants to regain his crown. We are promised a game system more complete than that of “Diablo 3”, with more advanced character customization possibilities, and an atmosphere closer to the wonderful “Diablo 2”, all guaranteed without (too) many microtransactions and other unpleasant habits taken by the developer in recent years. We are waiting to see, but we are ready to sign (with our blood if necessary).

“Dead Space” and “Resident Evil 4”, returned from the dead

In 2023, as for a few years, the fashion is for the remake of not so old games. This time, it’s “Dead Space” that sticks to it, excellent claustrophobic survival game released in 2008 : we will soon be able to walk through the dark corridors of the USG Ishimura, lost in the middle of the space (where no one will hear you scream, let’s remember) populated by “necromorphs”, hideous creators born from corpses.

Released in 2005, “Resident Evil 4” will also benefit from a redesigned version for current consoles. Quite logical since the previous episodes had all been entitled to it so far (with the exception of “Code Veronica”, but we do not despair that Capcom will one day honor the best game in the series). We are waiting to see if the very cult RE4 still works as well on our latest generation consoles.

“Silent Hill f”, Japanese horror

Well, okay, no release date has yet been announced for this game (one of four announced in the Silent Hill universe, after years of watching the series gather dust), and there’s even a strong chance that it will not be finished in 2023, but we want to believe it. “Silent Hill f” is the most titillating project of the four, with its story set in 1960s Japan, and its striking visuals. We cross our fingers, while telling ourselves that at worst, if it is not good, we can catch up on one of the three other “Silent Hill” games under development (all from different studios) .

“Lies of P”, delicious automaton recipe

We are not going to lie to each other, this very dark rereading of the Pinocchio story caught our eye. You play a much less peaceful automaton than his original inspiration, responsible for putting an end to the abuses of his father’s machines. Artistically, “Lies of P” has an undeniable touch. On the gameplay side, the game is largely inspired by From Software productions (“Dark Souls”, “Elden Ring” but especially “Bloodborne”) and having tried it with the controller in hand, we detected a very good potential in it. In general, we have a nose for these things.

“Oxenfree II”, at the borders of reality

Among the package of independent game suites announced for 2023 (“Teslagrad 2”, “The Wolf Among Us 2”, “Flashback 2″…), “Oxenfree II: Lost Signals” is undoubtedly the one we are waiting for the more.

Continuation of a very nice surprise of 2016where we played teenagers lost in a time loop, this new game will immerse us 5 years after the events of the previous one, in the footsteps of young Riley, back reluctantly in her hometown. The atmosphere of the first seems to be there, with its irruptions of the fantastic in everyday life, just like the clever dialogue system that made the original game unique. Fan of “Stranger Things”, you will be on familiar ground.

“Decarnation”, Cronenberg at the shrink

In the “video games of 2023” family, I would like the evil little cousin with a malformation who lives locked up in the attic. “Decarnation” is as bizarre as it is intriguing: it promises to explore, via a design in pixels as cute as it is deceptive, a world between dreams and reality, a physical and visceral representation of the dark aspects of its heroine’s soul. Traumas, anxieties, deformed bodies, everything is linked, like in a film by David Cronenberg or John Carpenter. We played it for a few minutes: it was certainly a little disturbing, but strangely fascinating.

“The Last Case of Benedict Fox”, the sins of the father

HP Lovecraft is definitely a goldmine for video game creators, and “The Last Case of Benedict Fox” is no exception. We explore an old mansion, the scene of a terrible murder and the disappearance of a child, which will quickly turn into a labyrinth full of dangers. The originality here is the design, reminiscent of Henry Selick’s animated films (“The Nightmare Before Christmas”, “Coraline”), and the gameplay, since we will be here in a metroidvania type adventure/action game.

“Eiyuden Chronicle”, the return of a cult concept

Role-playing game fans probably remember the “Suikoden” series, cult games from the first two PlayStations, where you could recruit and embody 108 different heroes and heroines. In addition to two remakes of the first episodes (when we told you it was fashionable), 2023 will also see the arrival of “Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes”, presented as the spiritual heir of the “Suikoden”, and for good reason: the project is led by their original creator, Yoshitaka Murayama. The first trailer promises an atmosphere and game sensations close to the original works, with its epics where the relationships between the characters matter as much as the great story.

“Goldorak”, go! Retro gamer in action!

It’s probably the game we know the least about, but don’t lie: if you grew up in the 80s, you necessarily want to type golgoths at the controls of Goldorak in video games. The developer Microids promises us an experience as faithful as possible to the animated series first broadcast in the late 70s. We hope that this will also involve having

a credits in VF as kitsch as possible.
