Dear friends and enemies of Stilum Curiae, it seems appropriate to bring this article to your attention appeared in Il Pensiero Cattolico, in which prof. Ettore Gotti Tedeschi intervenes on the case LaMDA from Google, which has revived the debate on the self-awareness of artificial intelligence. Enjoy the reading.

  • There are many questions about whether the Church should pronounce itself on the ethical and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence. Reading her Magisterium between the lines, one can discover that the Church has already indirectly made her voice heard, calling for a new sustainable and inclusive capitalism. Whether it is intended, understood or not, this new capitalism actually means “digital”. The good of human beings and the environment will be thanks to digital. So it was decided
  • In fact, sustainability and inclusion translate into this word which is a real project, a concrete idea. It is the project wanted and supported by the “whole world”, it is the key basis of our future, since it will be thanks to Artificial Intelligence that the digitization project will be carried out to save the whole world, allowing economic growth (without birth rates of course), the end of inequalities and above all allowing the protection of the planet.
  • But Artificial Intelligence is a tool, neutral in itself, of another true strategic choice concerning our civilization: Transhumanism, that is, that scientific philosophical thought that is convinced that the human condition can only be improved by science. Only science can improve humanity. Artificial Intelligence is only the tool with which to strengthen these human faculties. But since Artificial Intelligence is an it cannot, in itself, be morally evaluated, only the philosophical-scientific thought that uses it must be.
  • The church should therefore take care of this if anything. Before she too can be disintermediated by new digital actors as is happening to almost all the social institutions we are used to. Amazon is replacing shopping in malls. Facebook is replacing social gatherings at the bar. Google is replacing newspaper reading. Netflix is replacing movie theaters, etc. Maybe “someone” (who may even come to visit the Vatican) is also thinking about replacing the Church and its functions with some “Metaverse” solution, also the result of digital technology, which is a sort of “creation” made man-made, a kind of “incarnation” of the internet.
  • If within the church it is not adequately reflected and supernaturally reacted, Artificial Intelligence could become the new “Eucharist” in a relativized and lifeless religion where the priests will be digital neo-technocrats, who did the “seminar” in Silicon Valley….
